When news broke of a teaser trailer for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales being scheduled to air during tonight's season finale of Fear The Walking Dead, fans expected it to air during a random commercial break — but to everyone's surprise, the teaser trailer aired in the first commercial break and it was something.

There wasn't much context added to what we already know of the plot from the official synopsis already released:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Javier Bardem's Captain Salazar

The synopsis itself includes several details on the new antagonist, Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem — but it was the teaser trailer that provided us with our first glimpse at Captain Salazar, and he's something we haven't seen in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise.

We've seen undead pirates, fish-pirates, zombified pirates but never anything like this. Captain Salazar and his crew show up and they appear as apparitions but have the very real appearance of existing alongside the human characters present (the CGI and practical effects on Javier Bardem are amazing). Salazar and his crew appear on-screen in the fashion of horror villains, sneaking up on suspecting victims, then mercilessly slaughtering them without giving them an opportunity to fight back.

By the end of what we can see is a massacre, the only human person still alive in the trailer is of great intrigue too, because it is the mystery character of Henry, played by Brenton Thwaites.

Where's Captain Jack?

Nothing's known of Henry (Thwaites) at the moment, but we can clearly deduce from the dialogue between Henry and Captain Salazar that Salazar tasks Henry with finding Jack Sparrow. That bit of dialogue drives the question of why Salazar would spare Henry after slaughtering the rest of the soldiers aboard that vessel, then present him with a task which appears unsuited for him. Salazar must know of the affiliation Henry shares with Jack Sparrow, despite Henry lying to him. Otherwise, Salazar would've slaughtered Henry alongside the rest of the crew.

Henry must be hiding his affiliation with Jack Sparrow, but that mystery will likely be divulged sometime in the film. It still leaves us with the mystery of why Captain Salazar chooses Henry to deliver a message to Jack Sparrow. For all we know, Henry could already be in the employ of Jack Sparrow and is under the command not to acknowledge Jack Sparrow in any regard. If that's the case, Captain Salazar could know of this as well and seek to follow Henry as he returns to Jack Sparrow's location — but that's entirely speculative for the moment.

Other than the brief glimpse at Javier Bardem's character of Captain Salazar, the teaser trailer for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales didn't provide us with much more information in regards to the plot of the film. But we do have to acknowledge the superb entrance given to Bardem's Captain Salazar in the trailer.

It looks like he and his crew are going to be on a mission to seek revenge on Jack Sparrow, which also implies that it may have been Jack Sparrow's fault for Captain Salazar winding up in the Devil's Triangle prison, still speculative at the moment. Either way, an amazing way to intro a character who is supposed to bring dread and fear to those in his wake, and he certainly will.

For now, we'll just have to wait until another preview of the film is released or a full trailer to decipher any more clues towards the plot of the film.
