Bryan Singer Dishes The Dirt On Bringing Jean Grey And Scott Summers Back Together

With X-Men: Apocalypse tipped to be one of this year's biggest blockbusters, we don't have long to wait before Bryan Singer once again takes the reins of Fox's mutant superhero team-up. One of the biggest questions on everyone's lips is how Singer will once again handle one of the most famous comic book love stories of all time - the Jean Grey/ Scott Summers romance.

The notorious X-Men franchise director famously brought together (and tore apart) the couple during his stint on the first two films and the tragic conclusion to X2. Famke Janssen and James Marsden played the two misfit mutants in the original films, replaced by Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner and The Tree of Life's Tye Sheridan for X-Men: Apocalypse. Singer told Entertainment Weekly to expect a very different version of Jean and Scott in his latest outing:

In the beginning, she’s the last thing he’s interested in. When he first comes to the mansion, Scott’s blind so he can’t see her. Suddenly he gets some glasses and now he can see her and he’s like ‘Oh! That’s Jean Grey.’ Both of them are misfits in a way. Other mutants have settled in with their powers. This is all new to Scott Summers and he doesn’t like it and he doesn’t like school. And Jean, she not only has her telekinesis and her telepathy, but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn’t quite know what it is.

Singer had originally planned to explore the 'Dark Phoenix' saga if he had returned to direct a third X-Men film, but due to a dispute with Fox, he failed to return to the franchise until 2011 and X: Men First Class. Brett Ratner directed X-Men The Last Stand in 2006 and we all know how that ended. Amongst the casualties of Ratner's film were Patrick Stewart's Professor Xavier, but he most controversially killed off Scott Summers' Cyclops during the first act, taking the 'Dark Phoenix' saga in his own direction.

How Singer will explore the elements of 'Dark Phoenix' and the growing Grey/Summers relationship remains to be seen, but we do know that the events that closed X-Men: Days of Future Past pressed a reset button on the franchise. Apocalypse pics up after these events, in the 1980s, as Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters faces off against Apocalypse, the world's first and most powerful mutant.
