BSCCC: A Review

This will be an opinionated article about my time at the convention.

This past weekend was the Boston SouthCoast Comic Convention (and AnimeFest). In spite of the drama, slander slinging, and rumored illegal use of a fake link of a federal site, I still chose to attend the con to see if it was as bad as people were making it out to be. This article will be my honest observation of the con.

First off, the con was very small. Like mall store small. It was Matsuri-sized, which was not what I was expecting from what was advertised. If they had chosen to put the con on through until mall closing time, they would have been able to fit all their events into one day. But what they did still have was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it very much! All the cosplays and puppets that were there were amazing and beautiful. I didn't get any pictures, as the puppeteers were charging for photos (not the con, the people who brought the puppets). But it was still fun and excellent for families.

Second I was surprised to see how little they had for programming. They only had a handful of panels. It was mostly autographs, photo ops, and vendors. It wasn't really a convention so much as it was a marketplace. The few panels they had did not really make it a full convention, to be honest. But the vendors they had were great people. They were polite and respectful, even bartering the prices on their products for those on a limited budget. Some were even offering freebies too, which was great for small children to have something their parents didn't have to pay for, in case they managed to break it. You know, because kids. I even spoke with a few vendors, just to realize they were old friends of mine. It was a great place to reconnect with old college buddies.

Due to the way the con director handled things in the weeks prior to the con, many of the celebrities advertised had backed out, but the few who did still go were definitely worth showing for. They are great people and I was grateful to meet them and get a few autographs. My only disappointment with anything celebrity and photo op related things was the Batmobile being cancelled due to the snowstorm we ended up getting that day.

Back to the con director. That was the only fault I found with this con. He behaved like a small child throwing a tantrum, rather than the older man he actually is. I was appalled by the way he responded to people telling him the person he had on for photos was a sex offender. Admittedly, I spoke with an attorney, who did a lot of digging, and found that there is no person on the Virginia registry by that man's name. He was sent to court, but the charges were eventually dismissed after the mother of the child confessed to lying and making her daughter lie. Which means the link those articles provided was a false link to a federal site, so those article authors could be looking at serious consequences if their articles are still up. But even if the link is fake, the director's reaction was far from acceptable.

In conclusion, I will never again attend this convention due to the director's behavior, the false advertising of a full convention instead of the vendor market it really is, and the fact they call themselves a 'Boston' con when they aren't even in Boston. But! I support and encourage those who still wish to attend, as that is still a business for the vendors too. They make their money attending these things. Perhaps someone can convince the director to change the name and his attitude.
