Could some of these comic book characters appear in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' or a future Spidey film?

Spider-Man has faced seemingly overwhelming odds over the years, and I'm not just talking about his plethora of villains in the comic books. He has faced more opposition over the last decade in the theaters than any other comic book character making the transition. From the days of Tobey Maguire to the more recent Andrew Garfield, fans of the web-slinger have had to watch as two separate franchises toppled.

So, it's easy to understand the skepticism that fans of the beloved Spidey had when another new actor was announced to fill the tightly knit spandex suit. Yet the trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming sure looks to be giving us the Spider-Man film that we all have wanted from the beginning.

If this trailer tells us anything, it's that under Marvel's supervision the world where Spider-Man exists could earn a fantastic revival and a long future, much like we've seen with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The deal that brought Sony and Marvel together initially brought fans hope and lots of questions and after his appearance in the recent Captain America: Civil War fans became ecstatic, anxiously waiting for the upcoming film set to release on July 7, 2017.

With the anticipated success of Spider-Man: Homecoming, it's led many fans to believe Sony's claim of introducing a much larger Spider-Verse on the big screen. With Sony's recently announced solo Venom film (outside of #Marvel), the floodgates have opened considering that many believe that Spider-Man will leave the #MCU after the sequel film that's already slated for 2019.

That means that nearly any character in #SpiderMan's history could be in line to enter the slightly connected universe, and honestly that is where all the signs are pointing for #Sony. Even if they don't necessarily cross paths with the main #MarvelCinematicUniverse, we could easily get a spin-off Spider-Verse and here are 5 characters with potential to star in those films.

5. Spider-Gwen

In the Andrew Garfield led Spider-Man films, we met the beautiful Emma Stone as she portrayed Gwen Stacey - the unlikely love interest who died in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (or did she?). Regardless of the fan theories surrounding the film, the scene of Gwen's death was lifted directly from the comic series of the same name. Spider-Man failed to save the live of the woman he loved, and in turn he is filled with so much emotional strife and that is was spurned a move by writer Dan Slott to pitch the idea of an alternate-dimension Spider-Man, who became known as Spider-Gwen.

Since Marvel loves alternate dimensions in the comics, the idea of Gwen Stacey seemed like a good fit, and thus #SpiderGwen was born in 2014. She's garnered a great fanbase, and with the origin rewrite happening in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it would be a great time for Sony to introduce an alternate storyline and bring back a character that many fans love: Gwen Stacey.

Possible Fancast Actresses:

  • Dove Cameron - Voice: Spider-Gwen in Ultimate Spider-Man, Barely Lethal, Descendants
  • Emma Stone - La La Land, Easy A, The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2

4. Arana / Spider-Girl

Anya Sofia Corazon is one of my favorite additions to the Spider-Verse created by Marvel. As a gymnast living in Brooklyn, she definitely has the skill set to be a part of the Spider-Verse. As a teenager, Anya leapt in front of a seemingly innocent man from being attacked by a strange group. She took a fatal blow, and the stranger believed that she was destined to be a secret hunter for the Spider Society (long story). She is imbued with mystical powers that give her super-human abilities and a powerful blue exoskeleton.

Anya, is a powerful character to join Peter Parker as regardless of having powers or not, she is always willing to step in the line of fire to protect those who need it. She would be a great ally to join Sony's plans for the future of the Spider-Verse, and the recent changes to her character would feel like a good direction to take Spider-Man on considering her powers are more mystical than technological. This would help Sony distance themselves from the past's failed franchise concepts.

Possible Fancast Actresses:

  • Emily Rios - Breaking Bad, The Bridge, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series
  • Christian Serratos - Twilight, The Walking Dead, Ned's Declassified Survival Guide

3. Scarlet Spider

Scarlet Spider is an interesting character to add to the Spider-Verse, simply because he is technically a failed clone of Peter Parker (which there have been several). In this case I'm referring to Kaine Parker who became the latest Scarlet Spider. Kaine became deformed during the cloning process and was cast off as a failure, only to discover that his powers rivaled Peter. Kaine was a villain for a while before joining up with Hummingbird, a.k.a. Aracely Penalba. Aracely is a fairly new character in Marvel's Spider-Verse, but would be an ideal counterpart to the brooding Kaine.

A film around the story of creating a villain that matched Peter Parker would transition well to the big screen, and if Sony is able to add Hummingbird to the story then the darker origin story could be balanced out a bit. It would be an interesting venture for Sony to look into especially if they are really planning to develop a legitimate Spider-Verse after parting ways with Marvel Films.

Possible Fancast Actor/Actresses:

  • Wentworth Miller - Prison Break, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Resident Evil: Afterlife
  • Jared Padalecki - Supernatural, House of Wax, Flight of the Phoenix
  • Emily Rios (Hummingbird) - Breaking Bad, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series

2. Black Cat

Now lets assume that the solo Catwoman film never happened, and with that firmly erased from our memory let me introduce you to Black Cat, a.k.a. Felicia Hardy. She's the bad girl that wants so desperately to be good, and she does it all while wearing a skin tight black jumpsuit with retractable claws in her gloves. Black Cat is a character that has a long history with Spider-Man as she's been both anti-hero and support cast for our favorite web-head. Felicia would fit well in the story that Sony/Marvel are creating, and would be a good way to connect the universes without making it too complicated.

Black Cat has been a part of the Spider-Verse since the late '70s, and has a lot to offer Sony if they choose to incorporate her character into the universe they are building. The rumors of a potential Black Cat/Silver Sable film only fuel my hope that Felicia will truly appear in the Spider-Verse collection of films. The casting of Michael Chernus as Phineas Mason (The Tinkerer) bodes well for Black Cat to appear eventually, as Black Cat currently utilizes a collection of tools and gadgets stolen from the Tinkerer to achieve her powers.

Possible Fancast Actresses:

  • Evan Rachel Wood - The Wrestler, Westworld, Thirteen
  • Zoey Deutch - Why Hom, Vampire Academy, Dirty Grandpa

1. Silk

Credit: Marvel Comics

Of all the possible Spider-Man character that could join the fray as a major film character, I believe that Silk is a great move to make for Sony to move forward with. Silk is another fan-favorite character introduced in 2014 when Peter learned that he wasn't the only student to be bitten by a radioactive spider on that fateful day. Cindy Moon was also bitten, but was kept in hiding by a character named Ezekiel (who also has connections to the Arana & Scarlet Spider). Peter was horrified that she was locked away so he freed her and now under the secret identity of Silk, Cindy is embarking on her own adventure to find her missing family.

Silk was the first attempt by Dan Slott and the rest of the team behind Spider-Man to widen the universe with additional characters. The chance they took with Silk has paid off, and likely will pay off for Sony as well, especially considering that they may already be moving in that direction with the Spider-Man: Homecoming casting of "Cindy" with Tiffany Espensen.

Possible Fancast Actresses:

  • Tiffany Espensen - Kirby Buckets, Repo Men, Earth to Echo

Regardless of who arrives in a larger Spider-Verse, it's exciting to imagine how big the future franchise could be considering how beloved the comic series is in general. There is a massive universe out there and only time will tell how massive Sony wants to make their Spider-Man universe.
