If you're like me, you have one hell of an imagination and take a lot of joy from melting into a good book set in a gorgeous world full of wonder, adventure and all things magical. Don't get me wrong, life is great, but escapism is a good way to refresh ourselves and keep things entertaining.

In this article, I give you three of my favourite series that have kept my heart full of joy and my imagination well exercised.

The House of Night books are the incredible works of mother and daughter authors P.C. & Kristin Cast. The series follows Zoey Redbird, a regular girl Chosen to be vampire, as she adapts to life at her local House of Night. Chosen by the Goddess of Night, Nyx, Zoey deals with friendship, romance and rivalry in a way that's super relatable, all while going through a Change that will mean that her life is never the same again.

I started reading these books a few years ago and was hooked instantly; the balance between regular teenage drama issues and the gorgeous and magical world of vampires make it perfect for young adults, especially young women. Zoey is a great role model that knows when to take charge but also shows us that mistakes will be made and it's okay to rely on the people around you for support. I highly recommend these books to anyone looking to add a bit of magic to their lives.

Eragon is the first in a series of book based in Alagaesia, a world of Dragon Riders and their Dragons. The first book was made into a film in 2006, and was how I first discovered this treasure trove. In my personal opinion, the film was gorgeous and well made, and tells the first part of the story about Eragon, a farm boy that becomes a Dragon Rider and fights to take down the evil ruler, Galbatorix.

The film caught my interest, but the book made me fall in love. As of now, I have only read the first book, but it tells so much more than the film, and really leaves you wanting to know more. The film alone is one of my all time favourites, and the book even more so. I myself cannot wait to get the other books and continue with this adventure, so why don't you join me? (Oh, and by the way? Eragon's Dragon is called Saphira, coloured a gorgeous shade of blue and my namesake.)

Oh, Derek Landy, you are one hell of a genius. The Skulduggery Pleasant book series is incredible. A perfect combination of action, humour and magic, it's plots are thrilling and entertaining, with not a dull section in sight. The magic skeleton detective, Skulduggery Pleasant (yes you heard me right, magic skeleton detective) and his badass partner, Valkyrie, make for one hell of an adventure.

I wish I could say more, but you really need to experience the books yourself to understand the pure joy and excitement that this series gives me. Enjoy!
