'Captain Marvel:' A Review

Seriously, go see Brie Larson be an intergalactic superstar.

Marvel Studios' film Captain Marvel just recently came out on March 8th (International Women's Day, for those of you who didn't know) and this one is worth seeing, to say the least. On top of being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is already known for its amazing characters, action sequences and humorous jokes, Captain Marvel is one of few female superheroes and one of the first to get her own solo origin story film.

The film takes place in the 90s, so yes, get ready for some No Doubt jams and some grungy fashion trends. The movie also takes place mostly on Earth, but on a few other planets/universes as well. Brie Larson's character, Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel, is a fiery spirit and as sarcastic as they come, on top of being an incredibly strong woman.

Without spoiling too much for those who haven't seen it I'll say this, Carol Danvers has lost her memory and does not have any recollection of her past and does not know she is from Earth originally. She also spends the majority of the movie trying to track down information, a special weapon for the Kree army that someone on Earth was making and the Skrulls. When she isn't busy investigating things alongside young Nick Fury, she's busy kicking ass and taking names.

I know that sounds vague so far, but trust me, there are quite a few plot twists and surprises that I don't want to spoil so I've kept it as vague as possible.

If you're a Marvel fan and even if you aren't, this is a great movie for you to watch. Even if you're a female who wants to see more females on the screen, especially in action movies, this one is definitely for you.

And bring the kids to this one, especially your daughters, so they see a great role model in a popular movie.

I've seen a few negative reviews here and there and would like to shed some light on why Captain Marvel and other female superheroes are important so you can ignore the other critics and the sexist reviews out there.

Captain Marvel and other female superhero movies, such as DC Comics Blockbuster hit Wonder Woman, coming to the big screen show women and girls alike that they matter. It's important to have diverse characters and make something audiences will want to see. Look at the success of Marvel Studios' Black Panther, audiences want to see diversity and people like themselves represented in movies.

Female superheroes demonstrate how fantastic women are. We are strong, fierce, brilliant, and resilient, but we are also kind, gracious and protective. Movies such as Captain Marvel and hopefully more female superhero movies to come show just that. These films show just how powerful women are.

I know what you may be thinking, there are women superheroes, just look at the Avengers. However, out of the six original Avengers, only one is a female. This movie means a lot to women for showing how strong women can be and as a solo act as well, AKA a woman as a main character, instead of being the sidekick or partner.

This movie is also going to mean a lot to girls growing up. Captain Marvel is going to show girls how strong they are and how confident and quite frankly, badass they can be when they grow up. Representation matters and I'm thankful movies such as Black Panther, Wonder Woman, and soon Captain Marvel have graced the silver screens in the name of diversity.

I've never been a bigger Marvel fan or prouder to be a woman after this movie. Brie Larson is perfect for this role and it shines through Carol Danvers the entire time. Head to theaters now to check out the female fierceness that is Captain Marvel.
