For a few months now Marvel has had us all guessing and dreaming about the casting possibilities for one of comics greatest heroes, Captain Marvel. It has been one of the most widely debated topic as there have been dozens of speculations and hopes for the casting call; everyone from Kathryn Winnick to Rhonda Rousey. Marvel has yet to fail us with their casting choices in the cinematic and television universes. We've seen incredible performances by several actors as they've brought to life everyone from Black Widow to Bruce Banner and Marvel's solid casting choices don't seem close to stopping. At the San Diego Comic-Con Marvel wowed fans with the announcement that Brie Larson would be taking on the role of Captain Marvel, and it's perfect! So let's go through the basics.

Who is Captain Marvel?

For the uninitiated, Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel, is a pilot who joins NASA as the Head of Security for a secret military base. During her time on base she befriends one of the scientists who turns out to be the super-powerful Kree hero, Mar-Vell a.k.a. Captain Marvel. I know, I know it gets a little confusing, but when the secret base is attacked she is caught in an explosion and her DNA is fused with Kree genetics. Carol is a cocky, controlling character that cracks jokes as quickly as Tony Stark, so she has a ton of personality to spare. Through her time in the comics, she has partnered with both the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers, which theoretically means that she should be a pivotal character for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Who is Brie Larson?

Well, Brie Larson is probably most widely known for her Oscar-winning role of Joy, in the brilliant film Room. Yet Brie has an impressive career as a television actress to boot, appearing in several sitcoms and TV movies before taking a role in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (along with another certain Captain in the Marvel films who has given his opinion on Brie's casting as well). After appearing in Scott Pilgrim, Brie just kept adding role after role to her resume including The Gambler and the upcoming films The Glass Castle and Kong: Skull Island before finally taking her rightful place as the glorious Captain Marvel (rumored to appear in Avenger: Infinity War - Part I in 2018).

How will Captain Marvel affect the future of the MCU?

Considering how integral she has been to several story arcs over the years, it would be hard to deny her apparent importance to the future of the MCU films. Over the years Carol has partnered with: SHIELD, the X-Men, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ultimates, A-Force, Alpha Flight and even the Starjammers. Along with her affiliations she's teamed up with countless other solo heroes over the years, most notably Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man. The fact that she has had so many encounters over the years, makes it fairly obvious that she could have an immediate and long-lasting impact on several facets of the MCU. Then add in her personality and her struggles with the reality of being what she is, and you've got a character laced with emotion and turmoil which will bring a new sense of drama that hasn't really been seen on screen yet.

Ultimately only time will tell as to what we're going to see in Captain Marvel, and how much we will see her before her solo film venture. Is Brie Larson the right choice? I sure think so.
