'Captain Marvel' in Under 600 Words

Was it good? Was it bad? Was it neither?

Her name is Carol.

Captain Marvel had plenty of hype to match. As the first female solo superhero film in the MCU, the follow up to Avengers: Infinity War's end credits scene, and a potential future cinematic universe plot to seed. How did it manage to achieve this and where were the flaws, if any?

You can read this first section spoiler-free. The following segment will be clearly marked as "SPOILERS" from there it's really your decision.

These are my thoughts.

Spoiler-Free Review

The film opens to a wonky beginning. Some of the dialogue feels janky and the plot unravels in an odd fashion. However, after the first 30 minutes to a third of the film, it really takes off.

The humour improves. The plot thickens. The 90s show up. From this point on, the film almost continually improves bar one or two bits of dialogue and a magically teleporting character.

The last thing to mention before I move to characters is the CGI. At multiple points it is bad, not so bad the film is unwatchable, just bad enough that it draws my eyes for the wrong reason and it doesn't blend with what's happening on screen.

Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) is a fun, powerful addition to the MCU and works wonders alongside Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). The stand out performance beyond our main two characters is Ben Mendelsohn as Talos. A truly interesting character who Ben portrays gloriously.

I would say it's worth going to see. But if you've no interest in the MCU and just wondered what the fuss was about, you can wait for it to move from the cinema to another platform. It hasn't changed the world, but it has continued the ever-building proof that women can hold up a current and a possible future franchise.

Spoilers

I'll give people some space to leave.

This is your space.

Don't waste it.

That cat. That neon suit option. That end credits scene. Nick Fury's face. The music. Teleporting Talos?

Yes, Goose is the best thing and a Flerken. Precious Goose must protect us.

Why show me that you can just change the suit to any colour arrangement like a neon warrior and not give me it? Also, that little girl (Monica) was super proficient at controlling the suit.

By the end credits scene, Captain Marvel had all the power. I didn't even care about seeing the Avengers.

Nick Fury's face looked weird several times, as did Goose and a couple other CGI moments.

Honestly, I feel they didn't use music well in the film. It felt like an attempt to recreate Thor: Ragnarok, but in four scenes and, by the way, it's the 90s.

Now! I may have missed something, so if I did please explain to me what happened here. How did Talos find and know to become Nick Fury's boss? It honestly threw me as I watching it. Is it explained? How did he get there I do not understand.

I still really enjoyed it though. I'm just aware there are flaws. Much like every movie.

NOTE: At one point Monica is left outside of a hut with headphones on when they know that there are aliens and new threats in their lives. I know they leave the door open, but like what? That's surely not a good idea. No one even looks towards the door and she's out there for several minutes. Just bring her in the room, you're not watching anything, you're listening, so the headphones still work? Just bring her in and shut the door you maniacs.

Thank you!

Thanks for reading my thoughts on the latest addition to Marvel's ever-growing list of films.
