'Captain Marvel' Is an Entertaining Superhero Film Despite Not Being One of Marvel's Best

I promised reviews for Fighting With My Family and Isn't It Romantic, but I don't have much to say about those movies. Fighting With My Family is great and funny and one of my favorites this year and Isn't It Romantic is an okay movie that could have been better.

But now that I'm done with that, it is now time to talk about the newest addition into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, another film that has received backlash from fanboys. Except this time, people hated it BEFORE they watched it.

Here's my review!

Captain Marvel is a superhero film written by Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet and directed by Boden and Fleck. It's the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, a member of an elite Kree military unit who crash-lands on Earth and goes on an adventure with Nick Fury to discover her past while also trying to stop a Skrull invasion.

Now, before the release of this movie, there was a lot of controversy over something Brie Larson said being taken out of context and there have been internet trolls and idiots everywhere boycotting and review-bombing this movie.

And if you're one of those people, read my article here. All I have to say is, if you're boycotting this movie, you're missing out on an incredibly badass movie.

I have some good and bad things to say about this movie. I'll start with the good. First, the action sequences are incredibly entertaining. There are a lot of fun fight scenes in this movie that I had fun watching.

A lot of people were worried that Captain Marvel would just automatically become the strongest Avenger in just one movie because female empowerment or something. But that definitely isn't the case.

There are a lot of times in this movie where she gets knocked down and needs to get back up. She fails a lot in this movie, and it's pretty interesting to see her grow as a character as she learns more about herself, finds out what she is capable of, and how she got her powers.

I also loved the comedy in this movie, which wasn't prominent in the trailers. There's so much good humor in this movie, especially from Nick Fury, and I like how he's much more lighthearted in this movie than the mature, older character we see in the other Marvel movies.

Speaking of Fury, the digital de-aging of Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg (as Phil Coulson) is some of the most impressive CGI I've ever seen. It was so good that I never noticed it. It didn't stand out at all because of how real their faces looked.

The performances were good. Brie Larson is a very good actress (especially in Room) and she was good in this movie. I felt like she could have showed a bit more emotion during some scenes, but I liked her performance as Carol Danvers.

Jackson is great as Fury, and I think my favorite part of this movie might actually be Ben Mendelsohn. Though I've already seen him play villains in Rogue One and Ready Player One, he not only plays a good bad guy here, but he also brings a bit of comedy to his role that I loved.

And now for my criticisms. First, I found it a little bit hard to connect with Carol Danvers as a character because she was very stoic throughout this movie and not incredibly relatable as a hero. Her character could have been built a bit better to get us to root for her.

I also thought the story was nothing to get worked up over. It doesn't introduce anything new to the Marvel formula and it's just incredibly average for an origin story. Nothing about the story was particularly special.

This movie could be a bit predictable at times, and in terms of quality, it feels more like the MCU's earlier entries, like Thor. The story was probably the most disappointing part of the film.

But this movie has some very good 90s nostalgia and the perfect amount of feminism. It also uses the shapeshifting Skrulls to the film's advantage and there's a good amount of misdirection that this film was able to use.

However, there were just some things I didn't quite like about this movie. It tries to explain some things that haven't yet been explained. Some of it was good, and others, I wasn't a big fan of.

This movie also pays tribute to Stan Lee very well. The audience was applauding and so was I. And the mid-credits scene in this movie? All I have to say is I'm more pumped for Avengers: Endgame than ever before.

Overall, this movie was good. It's not Black Panther good, nor does it beat any of the Captain America movies. But it's a fun movie that I had a lot of fun watching, and I liked it a lot.

I'm gonna give 'Captain Marvel' an 8/10.

I'm gonna start rounding my movie grades to the nearest whole number, just because I think that's a better way of grading something.

Guys, I'd recommend checking this movie out. Just don't expect the best Marvel movie ever or anything. It's just an average Marvel movie and it's a pretty fun movie. Thanks for reading.
