Characters That all Situational Comedies Have

These are all needed characters to make a great sit-com.

Friends 1994

Now, over the past little while sit-coms have been going out of style. Shows like Frasier, Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Seinfeld, and Big Bang Theory were all great television shows with long lasting seasons. However, these shows have all characters that are pretty much the same. In this article I will be comparing How I Met Your Mother characters to Friends.

1. The number one character in 'How I Met Your Mother' is the main character Ted.

Ted wants to get married to the "right one," even though she was there all a long. He has also been widowed and left at the alter. He is probably the character with the worst luck. Sound familiar? Yes, Ross is pretty much the same guy. Ross has been in love with Rachel and they have been on again and off again, much like Robin and Ted. Ross has been a professor and so has Ted. Ted has a passion that his friends think is boring. As soon as Ross goes into dinosaurs his friends zone out. Ted got really drunk and got a tramp stamp while Ross got married to his ex-girlfriend. Ted and Ross are both romantics. Ted's best friend is Marshall which was someone he met in college. Ross and Chandler are also best friends who met in college.

2. Robin or Should I Say Rachel

They have both put their careers ahead of their personal relationships. Rachel was invested in her fashion career and moving forward even though she has had bad job in the past. Robin was the same way, she was passionate about her television career and she has also had to pay her dues. They both had on and off relationships throughout the seasons, but then they ended up with the guy they were meant to be with.

3. Joey or Maybe Barney

The two players of their friends group of course Joey was less of a psychopath than Barney was. They can also be seen as opposites because Joey was an out of work actor and Barney is basically rolling in money. Joey was in love with Rachel who was Ross's love interest and Barney was in love with Robin who is Ted's love interest. Barney is also kind of his own character because of how far he takes pranks where Joey and Chandler just do things that are not too well thought out.

4. Marshall or Chandler

Marshall had a need to fit in with Barney's co-workers and Chandler wanted to fit in with the people he used to work with before getting promoted. Marshall's dream job came much later than any of his other friends and same with Chandler. Chandler and Marshall had to go through learning a new job and they had to put making a family on hold for a bit. They are also willing to do whatever it takes to make their significant other happy.

5. Monica with a little Phoebe made a Lily.

Lily is the kindergarten teacher who always wanted to be a painter. I see Phoebe here because of her passion for playing music and her songs may not have been one hit wonders, but so we Lily's paintings they were not the best pieces of art. Lily was always the badass of the group back in her teen years and so was Phoebe because she lived on the streets and knows how to take care of herself. Monica is also listed here because Lily always wanted to have kids just like her. The episode of where Monica buys those really expensive shoes reminded me of the episode where Lily tells Robin that she has a lot of debt to pay off because of her need to shop. Lily knows how to scare people and Phoebe also has a bit of a temper.
