Check out the New 'Captain America: Civil War' Clip - Have Marvel Missed a Trick?

The most remarkable thing about this clip is the sheer quality of the teamwork.

Have you seen MTV's exclusive footage from Captain America: Civil War? It's a down-and-dirty slugfest between three Avengers and "seven hostiles" - and it's tremendously cool!

I think the most remarkable thing about this clip is the sheer quality of the teamwork. Captain America's approaching this unknown situation with a clear plan of attack - he goes in first as scout, Falcon comes in high, and the Scarlet Witch mops up on the ground.

Also fascinating is how the characters play to one another's strengths. The Scarlet Witch's telekinesis is used to set up one enemy for Falcon to take out. It's the kind of move that shows these guys have been training together, and it's something that's often missing from superhero team films.

But take a closer look at the Scarlet Witch's powerset, and you get a few surprises. In The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, we saw basic uses of her powers - we saw her use telepathy to mess with the Avengers' minds, and we saw telekinetic blasts that decimated the Ultrons. In this clip, we first see (as in the trailers) that she's able to use telekinesis to fly, and then she's using that powerset to generate shields and grasp enemies in her telekinetic grip.

X-Men fans will recognise this powerset - it's pretty much traditional telekinesis, as used most prominently by Jean Grey. Even the levitation is visually reminiscent of Jean in the classic X-Men: Legends games. Of course, this is actually very, very different to what comic book fans are used to for the Scarlet Witch.

In the comics, the Scarlet Witch has traditionally been associated with hex magic. In her current ongoing series, James Robinson has shifted gears to a more generalised version of 'witchcraft'. It's an excellent series, and well worth checking out, but contrasts massively with the Scarlet Witch's portrayal in the movies.

I'd been assuming that, with Doctor Strange due out this year, the MCU Scarlet Witch would also be tied (retrospectively) to magic. It's still possible, but to me this clip makes it a lot less likely. In this clip, it seems that the Russo Brothers have committed themselves to the brief explanations given for Wanda's powers in Avengers: Age of Ultron. I'm not entirely sure that's wise - Marvel have boxed themselves in a little.

Still, that being said, the sequence looks tremendous. The quality of the interplay between the characters is fantastic, and I can really see what's getting the first viewers so excited!
