The Big Bang Theory is one of the most well-known comedy sitcoms to date, with the show taking viewers through the lives of seven people, most of which being scientists. The show was created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, who also act as executive producers on the show. The Big Bang Theory made its debut way back in 2007 on September 24, with season one being made up of 24 episodes.

Before Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) were introduced into the show, The Big Bang Theory started off with just five main characters—Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Howard (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar). Season one got mixed reviews from the critics, but the reviews got better as season two and three arrived.

Obviously, fans knew one day they’d have to say goodbye to the show and now is the time. It has been announced that season 12 (2018/19) will be The Big Bang Theory’s last ever season, with the writers bringing the show to a steady end. The show bosses are keeping everything tight-lipped for now, but here is what we know so far.

The sitcom, which has won seven Primetime Emmy Awards, will be broadcasting its last ever episode to the world this Spring, with May 16 being announced as the date of the final episode. On March 11 2019, The Big Bang Theory tweeted this:

“We’re going out with a BANG! Don’t miss the one hour series finale of The #BigBangTheory on May 16 at 8/7c!”

Some important details there. You read it correctly. The series will be bowing out with a “super-sized” one-hour long special episode. Thursday, May 16 is when the US will say goodbye to the show, however, the final episode date is yet to be confirmed for UK viewers.

Speaking about the ending of the show, one of the main stars, Mayim Bialik recently posted a video on her YouTube channel talking about the “grief” that she’ll encounter when the show closes its curtains for the final time.

“All things must end, even the good things must end. I have to be in acceptance of what is instead of lamenting what was and fearing what’s next.”

It’s not all bad news though. Young Sheldon, which is a Big Bang Theory spin-off show starring Iain Armitage, has been ordered for a third and fourth season with CBS (E4 in the UK). This means Jim Parsons will still be around as Sheldon through narrations until at least 2021. Kelly Kahl, the CBS Entertainment President, has also spoke of the possibility of a second spin-off series. Kahl said:

“The ball is squarely in their court. If they want to talk to us about it, we are here to listen.”

The guest-star list is yet to be confirmed, but it has been recently announced that Christine Baranski will be returning as Leonard’s mother in the one-hour series finale. Beverly Hofstadter is a fan-favourite character, who likes to talk to Sheldon more than her son, Leonard. Baranski said:

“There were many episodes where I couldn’t show up in L.A. because of ‘The Good Fight’ so I’ve actually Skyped episodes from my producer’s office in Brooklyn. I just sat in a box and they set up a computer.”

The end is almost near with just six episodes left to be filmed, taking the episode count to 279 in total. Fans will have to sit tight and enjoy what’s left of the show before reaching for the box of tissues as the show draws to a close on May 16th. If it’s anything like Friends, then tissues will be essential.
