Daenerys Targaryen Saved My Life
Fire and blood. The infamous trademark words of House Targaryen and the motto that has become my life's story. You see, like Daenerys Stormborn, I too was the child of a mad man. A narcissistic man who spent years abusing my mother and I. A man who did not want a daughter and sought every opportunity to let me know that.

The Red Wedding. It did something to me. Emotionally, mentally, physically. No television show has ever evoked that sort of reaction from me. It was brutally brutal.
Matt LucasPublished 5 years ago in GeeksWhen I Play the Game of Thrones, I Bewilder My Friends
It all began for me with two of my best friends and my cousin back in 2017. All three of them convincing me in their own cunning ways to start binge watching this "magnum opus" of a series. Only then, I treated it as a regular show with a small fan base backing it up with a desperate promotional campaign. Well folks… As you might have probably guessed, I decided to have a go and I WAS WRONG!

Eight years ago, I was only 11 years old. I had never even heard of Game of Thrones before, and it wasn’t until late 2016/early 2017 that it really took off with my peers and I rarely saw it in the mainstream media as I just didn’t take any interest, nor did I really notice it until I saw it pop up in my Tumblr feed one day. I thought it looked decently interesting, so I checked out the first episode but within the first five, I closed the window. It looked like the most boring show on the planet! I gave it a couple more shots here and there, but ultimately, I left it and forgot about it.

It’s crazy, isn’t it? How a crazy, fantasy-filled show like Game of Thrones ended up being one of the biggest steps towards helping me overcome my mental illness.

I have a confession to make. (Please, don't kill me.) I have never watched Game of Thrones. Well, not until recently. I am not exactly sure why, but I have never had much interest in watching this show before. Maybe because I thought there was enough ugliness going on in the real world and I didn't feel the need to see more nasty scenes on TV. Perhaps, I was put off by the idea of witnessing favourite characters die on a regular basis, and so I didn't want to get attached.

"Swift as a deer. Quiet as a shadow. Fear cuts deeper than swords. Quick as a snake. Calm as still water.” Arya of House Stark is and always has been a badass, plain and simple. Never one to follow what she is supposed to do, she creates her own path and follows her feet to new and exciting adventures.

I seriously never saw my life becoming what it had. Anything and everything I ever dreamed or planned was long forgotten memories when Game of Thrones came into my world.
The Rajah MillaPublished 5 years ago in GeeksHow 'Game of Thrones' Helped Me Beat My Anxiety
I still remember it like it was yesterday. Season 1, episode 9. Title: Baelor. I was already hooked on Game of Thrones at this point and was recommending it to all my friends, but I got all the usual responses that a then niche TV fantasy drama was receiving in 2011 from, “Dragons? Ice zombies? Nah mate, not for me!” to “Naw, I’m not watching that gay fantasy stuff!” It reminded me how disconnected I still was from a wider network of friends. Yeah, I like all the usual stuff a British lad is supposed to like: football, rugby, boxing, boozing on the weekends etc. But my real passions are the geek interests: comic books, professional wrestling, sci fi novels etc. It’s not that my mates didn’t respect me for having an interest in these things, they just weren’t interested and would appreciate if I didn’t bore them with it. But then with shock and awe I watched Ned Stark (brilliantly played by Sean Bean) have his head removed for being stupid enough to be the most honourable man in Westeros.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not writing to bash this monumental achievement of pop culture. Far be it from me to acknowledge the far-reaching effects of this series on audiences around the world, including many of my friends and relatives. I just want to put a little perspective on the view from those that did not (gasp!) watch this 8-year event. This is a personal point of view, not a value judgment of the series’ merits.

Game Over! I don’t watch television anymore. Once upon a time, I would settle down for an evening and kick off my boots, grab a dog or two, and snuggle down for an hour or two of fluffy TV. I could easily watch a show about cookery or how to improve my living space without threat of those culinary and home-improvement tools being used for anything other than whisking up a soufflé or smoothing down a meter or two of roughcast plasterwork.

(Warning: Mild spoilers ahead!) After eight long years on the small screen, the legendary Game of Thrones has come to an end, and while the show has varied in quality, it has left an undeniable mark on pop culture at large. What it did over eight seasons was get people together in a way no series can; it’s given us many stories to tell over the years, but here’s one from me.
