Hitomi: Tell me a little about yourself.

Blueheartless: I'm mainly a video game streamer on Twitch and Youtube. I have a degree in Computer Science and Computer Networking. However, due to mental and physical illness, I am unable to leave the house much. So, I want to become a makeup artist instead. My original goal was to become a Twitch partner, but the competition is too high.

Apart from cosplay, what else do you like/do? (Ex: hobbies)

Mainly a gamer. I also watch anime, I'm big into Visual Kei (Gothic Japanese music and fashion style), and I practice makeup.

How long have you been cosplaying?

Almost ten years now.

Which character was your first cosplay?

Ryuk from Death Note. Before I even knew what cosplay was (laughs).

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Leon from Kingdom Hearts.

What do you think is your cosplay specialty (or specialties)?

Probably trying to look like the character as much as possible. Even if I don't have the money to afford custom made cosplay, I try to go for a more casual look if I can't afford it.

If there are strengths, there are weaknesses too. Is there a skill (or skills) that you know you’re weak at in cosplay? What techniques do you want to work on or feel like you need improvement in?

Makeup. Specifically, covering the eyebrows. I would love to learn to cover them and make it similar to the character's wig color.

Another is taking the right angle for photos with no lighting equipment. I'd like to improve in the photography part as well.

How do you try to step up your cosplay game? (Ex: going to Youtube for makeup tips, going on forums to ask other cosplayers what needs improvement, etc.)

Youtube has helped me a lot with makeup, making props, or fixing wigs. I ask other cosplayers as well, but they're not as helpful in person. Online is the way to go.

Do you have a particular cosplay style (makeup, whether you bought your cosplay or made it yourself, etc.)?

Some cosplay I've made myself. Makeup, I always try to get better and improve. Some cosplay, I've bought from random stores to match the character's outfit. Rarely do I buy a full custom made cosplay, it has to be a character I'd love to cosplay every time or something I can afford on a budget.

What do you like about cosplay?

The feeling of being the character you admire and love so much. It's as if you are portraying yourself as the character and bring it into reality.

What do you dislike about cosplay?

Probably the community, it used to be much more fun and accepting. Now, everyone is just doing their own thing and stopped communicating as much or it's just all about competition and attention.

What challenge(s) have you encountered when cosplaying?

Waking up early and trying to put everything on, especially detailed makeup. Not being able to eat much or walking too much that your feet hurt badly. The worst is taking cosplay on and off during breaks or parts of it falling off or breaking.

Are there any special memories you have in cosplay?

Yes, meeting awesome new friends who like to hang out, even when you're not at conventions. Taking photos with cosplayers who dress up as your favorite characters. The best is probably when someone knows your character and asks for a photo.

Do you have any feelings, regarding the cosplay community?

I wish they were more open to hanging out and becoming friends based on the same interests outside of conventions. Usually, there's a lot of unnecessary drama these days.

Why do you cosplay?

It symbolizes my love for the character and style. It makes me feel good being someone I admire and not just how people see me as just a person. It's fun turning into a character you love.
