When the news that Lionsgate would be making a gritty reboot of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, fans rejoiced. Not only was nostalgia going to be hitting the roof all over America, but finally the fans of the original Rangers were going to get to see their favorite show grow up with them.
Unfortunately, recent news suggests that the upcoming film will not be a reboot of any brand of Rangers, but instead a continuation of the TV series. That means that the recent casting announcements of Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, R.J. Cyler, and Ludi Lin are not going to be playing Jason, Kimberly, Billy, and Zack.
Collider is reporting that Haim Saban and Dean Isrealite are rewriting the original script that would have been a reboot of the Mighty Morphin' series, and will now follow this list of characters:
Callum Oliver, the Red Ranger/Tyrannosaurus
Priya Patel, the Pink Ranger/Pterodactyl
Brian Olson, the Blue Ranger/Triceratops
Oscar Fernandez, the Black Ranger/Mastodon
Teyana Jones, the Yellow Ranger/Saber-toothed Tiger
The name that stands out to me is Callum Oliver. Now, this is either the biggest coincidence in the world, or this could mean that Dacre Montgomery has been cast to play not only the Red Ranger but the son of legendary Power Ranger, Tommy Oliver.
This could also lead to the actor who played Tommy Oliver, Jason David Frank, making a cameo appearance.
My take on it?
Personally, I was extremely disappointed to hear that Lionsgate had scrapped their gritty reboot idea, and instead decided to make it a part of the TV universe. I think it will lead to the darker ideas becoming more kid friendly and make for a less quality film, taking away depth. The Power Rangers have become so over-saturated on TV that the film would have been a much needed refresher of the classic superhero franchise.
That being said, if they do decide to create a character like Callum Oliver, and he does turn out to be Tommy Oliver's son, then that could at least keep me interested in the film. I loved the character of Tommy all the way from the Green Ranger to the Black Dino Thunder Ranger. So if his son has grown up to lead a new Power Rangers team, then I will give it a chance for that alone.
It has since been confirmed by Saban that Montgomery and the rest of the cast will be playing the original characters: Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Trini, and Billy.
BUT: If there is any truth behind these rumors at one time being true, it could mean fan favorite Jason David Frank is being looked at to at least make a cameo appearance by Saban.
