What we know so far of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

There's still some time before Spider-Man: Homecoming goes under production, and there isn't much in terms of confirmed information on the film. However, we do know that an original staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be co-starring alongside Spider-Man (Tom Holland) in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Reports by the Hollywood Reporter confirm that Robert Downey Jr. will once again don his suit of armor as Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Along with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) with a confirmed role in the film, he'll also be in the role of mentor for the young, Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man. Other than that tidbit of information, we don't know much else of what Tony Stark is doing in Spider-Man: Homecoming. But Tony Stark may have some business of his own to attend to in the film, other than monitoring Peter Parker's activities, including what his Aunt May is up to in her free time.

With the fact standing of Robert Downey Jr. being a pivotal character in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the inclusion of Tony Stark in the new Spider-Man feature confirms that Spider-Man is exclusively a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Being that Spider-Man: Homecoming will build off of the introduction of Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, there's no need for an individual Spider-Man feature anymore. Spider-Man has become welcomed into the MCU', and will get his origins fleshed out in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which will also introduce characters of the MCU' to Spider-Man's world. Robert Downey Jr. being a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has opened the door for other heroes and villains of the MCU' to appear in future Spider-Man films with his confirmed role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Along with Robert Downey Jr.'s role in the film, it's possible that Don Cheadle may be returning as James Rhodes/War Machine in Spider-Man: Homecoming, after the events of Captain America: Civil War have left him indisposed.

SPOILER ALERT: Spoilers for Captain America: Civil War ahead. Stop reading if you haven't seen the film yet.

Some interesting events occurred in Captain America: Civil War that will have lasting repercussions on the future of the MCU'. One of those events happened to be the massive injury sustained by James Rhodes a.k.a. War Machine. During the airport battle scene between Team Captain America and Team Iron Man, War Machine is accidentally struck by Vision. The result put War Machine in a tailspin from very high up in the air. Neither Iron Man or Falcon could reach War Machine before he hit the ground, and the resulting sky-fall dropped War Machine hard into the ground. James Rhodes/War Machine suffered severe spinal injuries, impairing his ability to walk. In the concluding scenes of Captain America: Civil War, Tony Stark is seen assisting James Rhodes in his recovery. As slow as it might be, James Rhodes is on his way to recovery.

Conclusion of Civil War leaves James Rhodes severely injured.

The concluding scene of Captain America: Civil War between Tony Stark and James Rhodes, could possibly be setting up more one-on-one interactions between Tony Stark and James Rhodes in the future. The reason for James Rhodes being injured in battle was inadvertently caused by Tony Stark/Iron Man calling for Rhodes/War Machine's assistance in the battle against Team Cap'. Tony may feel some guilt over Rhodes' recent setback, placing himself in the opportune position to develop a new technology to help his pal, Rhodey get back on his feet. As well as coping with the some of the guilt he feels for putting his friend in such a position. And Tony needs something to put his mind off of Pepper Potts. She wasn't seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and now Tony Stark all but confirmed their split in Captain America: Civil War; it looks like Pepper Potts is done in the MCU' unless she's retained some of her Extremis abilities after the events of Iron Man 3.

Will Don Cheadle be joining the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming alongside Robert Downey Jr. ?

With the next scheduled appearance of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in Spider-Man: Homecoming could mean that James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) might be tagging along as well. Seeing is that James Rhodes is currently out of commission to be an Avenger or in any type of active duty, he may be joining Tony Stark in New York during Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, James Rhodes may be back in the action sooner than you think, despite his recent setbacks.

The possibility of Don Cheadle having a role in Spider-Man: Homecoming brings up intriguing aspects to what his role could be in the film; along with Rhodes prospective recovery being a focal point. In the case that Don Cheadle is cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, James Rhodes/War Machine may also be an influential figure to Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Tony Stark. Rhodes/War Machine is a trained soldier with experience in fighting enhanced individuals, he may also have some insight for Peter Parker during his adventures in crime-fighting. That is if Don Cheadle is the next actor of the MCU' to star alongside Robert Downey Jr. in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

War Machine in Avengers: AOU.

That being said, James Rhodes a.k.a. War Machine may be back on his feet in Spider-Man: Homecoming if Tony Stark has something in the works to help James Rhodes back into the War Machine armor. Stark has a mind for ingenuity, give him enough time and he'll be able to develop something to help James Rhodes walk again. And that very well may happen in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

History of the Bleeding Edge technology in Marvel Comics

In the scenario that Tony Stark develops a new technology to help his pal, James Rhodes, Tony may be developing the long anticipated, Bleeding Edge technology to help his friend. The Bleeding Edge technology made a major impact on the adventures of Iron Man in Marvel Comics. Within Marvel Comics, Tony Stark developed a new type of armor by integrating Nano-machines into his own physical body. The nano-machines reside within Tony Stark's body until he mentally compels the nano-machines to form a suit of armor around him, creating the Bleeding Edge armor. The Bleeding Edge armor became famously known in Marvel Comics, as the creation of the armor set a new precedent in the Marvel Universe once Tony Stark donned it for the first time. By means of a new precedent, Tony Stark in his new Bleeding Edge armor was capable of defeating Thor, as well as dominating an angered Red Hulk. Those two accomplishments by themselves put Tony Stark/Iron Man back in contention to be one of the most powerful individuals on Earth. And he continued to dominate the Marvel Universe in the Bleeding Edge armor until there was a pause of peace, in which he no longer required its use. But that wasn't the last of the Bleeding Edge Armor in Marvel Comics. There was another hero of the Marvel Universe which donned the Bleeding Edge armor, but not of their own volition.

Another event in Marvel Comics caused a similarly, devastating injury to James Rhodes/War Machine which resulted in the Bleeding Edge armor being used to save Rhodes' life. Within Marvel Comics, James Rhodes was on a test flight and was severely injured in the crash. The resulting crash left Rhodes without all four limbs, and massive burns all over his body. James Rhodes was practically dead. He was kept alive for the time being. Then Tony Stark jumped in to save regenerate his body.

It was then that Tony Stark integrated the Bleeding Edge technology into cybernetic components to replace the missing pieces of James Rhodes' anatomy. Along with his limbs being replaced by cybernetic enhancements, Rhodes was also fitted with a cybernetic link to the enhancements, controlling them with his mind, via the Bleeding Edge technology. Thus, transforming James Rhodes into Cyborg-War Machine.

How the Bleeding Edge technology may fit into the MCU'

Seeing is that James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) just suffered a similar, debilitating injury in Captain America: Civil War, it's likely that he'll be on his feet with the help of the Bleeding Edge technology before the conclusion of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has yet to develop the Bleeding Edge technology in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he's going to need a science project to keep himself busy during Spider-Man: Homecoming. And with his pal, Rhodes needing some immediate attention, the Bleeding Edge technology will probably be Tony Stark's focus during the film, to help Rhodes after the injuries he's sustained.

In that scenario, Tony Stark would also use the Bleeding Edge technology for his own purposes by implanting the nano-machines in his body as well. Or could the Bleeding Edge technology be flawed in it's first test with James Rhodes/War Machine? Tony Stark is a genius, but it's not inconceivable to believe that he could make an error, resulting in the Bleeding Edge technology hurting James Rhodes even more.Tony Stark is more likely to test the Bleeding Edge technology on himself before attempting to use it on James Rhodes.

Iron Man, Bleeding Edge Armor.

Although the potential growth for Rhodes' character is great in that scenario. He could become a villain or he could become an even mightier Avenger than Tony Stark/Iron Man. Is it possible that James Rhodes may be set up to become Cyborg-War Machine in a future film, but as a villainous counterpart whose been corrupted by the untested technology? Or is the idea of James Rhodes becoming Cyborg-War Machine make him a more formidable adversary in the upcoming Avengers 3 and Avengers 4; where it is possible that every Avenger of the past and present may show up, including James Rhodes/War Machine? The Avengers are going to need all the help they can get when Thanos arrives, luckily Cyborg-War Machine would make a great addition to the team if James Rhodes becomes a user of the Bleeding Edge technology.
