50 Shades of Grey is a movie that has many audiences divided, whether it be over the choice of casting, the story itself, or the representation of the BDSM community.

While the two sequels have already been filmed in the form of #FiftyShadesDarker and #FiftyShadesFreed, there was a fourth novel that author E. L. James released based on the series simply called Grey, which was a retelling of the first novel from Christian Grey's perspective. While actor Jamie Dornan did fulfill his contract and film the original trilogy, he has been firm in stating that he wants to be finished with the film series now that shooting has wrapped.

However, if the film series were to continue into the fourth novel, who could step into the role? Before the cast was revealed, many fan casting choices had The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder as their top pick for the dominant, and there were rumors of him being cast as Jack Hyde, Anastasia Steele's boss and shady character all around in Fifty Shades Darker, though the role eventually went to Eric Johnson.

Now it appears that fans once again want Somerhalder to take over the role of Christian Grey once Jamie Dornan steps down. The actor will have a lot of free time on his hands now that Vampire Diaries is on its final season.

Late night TV's Jimmy Kimmel wanted to get to the bottom of the rumors, and brought the question up with Dornan, who shot down the rumors of the recasting for the trilogy:

“That would be really hard for them to do, considering we shot both of the movies. That's an expensive mistake, I'll put it that way.”

Though, it could be possible that they franchise will continue with the fourth film, and in that case, Dornan wished Somerhalder well, should he take over the role.

“Good luck to him. He’ll be great.”

Which the late-night host took as a "yes."

Whether or not Ian does join the franchise in the future, it does seem as though it is doing well without him, with the trailer for the Fifty Shades Darker sequel becoming the most-watched in its first 24 hours of release than any other movie in history.

It seems that audiences are more than willing to see Mr. Grey, no matter who is playing him.
