Could This Year's Arrowverse Crossover Special Take Place in Supergirl's World of Earth-38?

In last year's highly successful crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, the Arrowverse came together to battle the Dominators, a race of aliens bent on destroying all Metahumans. It was a threat worthy of uniting all of the heroes from Earth-1, and it was big enough that it warranted calling some backup from Earth-38: Supergirl. The crossover was a great success and it certainly whet the appetite for further crossovers down the line.

If there was one criticism, however, it did seem more of a crossover between the first three with only a guest appearance from #Supergirl. The crossover week's episode of Supergirl didn't really matter in the long run, especially when the final scene, which featured a guest appearance from Barry Allen and Cisco Ramon, was repeated in #TheFlash. There was a feeling that some opportunities were missed, particularly as none of Supergirl's supporting cast made the trip from Earth-38 to Earth-1.

While last season we missed out on the opportunity for Winn Schott to join Team Science, or witness Diggle's reaction to the Martian Manhunter, it seems that things might be a bit different this season. #Arrowverse executive producer Andrew Kreisberg was asked by Entertainment Weekly about Supergirl's role in this season's crossover:

“Kara and Alex are at the center of it through all four hours. One of the things we’ve been doing a lot this season is getting back to Season 1 and really making it Danvers sisters-centric, so a lot of what’s going on this season is Kara and Alex doing things in tandem, and the crossover won’t be any different.”

A Whole New World

While viewers are given a glimpse into Earth-38 fairly regularly, only #BarryAllen has visited Supergirl's world for a sustained period of time. While Barry and Cisco briefly visited Kara at home to recruit her for the battle against the Dominators, none of the other Arrowverse heroes have crossed dimensions. While the two worlds are very similar, it would be interesting to see the Earth-1 heroes in a new environment.

Team Arrow in particular have never left the comforts of Earth-1 and, as a team that knows every nook and cranny of Star City, it'd be interesting to see them in an unfamiliar environment. #Arrow is a much more grounded show compared to The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow, and as such, the more fantastical elements of comic book storytelling don't always fit into the gritty setting of Star City. In National City, there's a rather large alien presence — the alien amnesty was a big storyline in Supergirl Season 2 — and seeing Team Arrow (Diggle in particular) visiting the alien bar would be a sight to behold.

There are a few other interesting combinations that viewers could be treated to; as well as Winn teaming up with the brain trust, we would have Mick Rory visiting a new world and his eyes would light up at all of the new things to steal. Oliver Queen would certainly have a thing or two to teach Jimmy Olsen if the Guardian storyline is still happening, and the #LegendsofTomorrow would add some interesting combinations to the mix — not least the fact that Sara would probably hit on Alex.

A More Personal Crossover

Greg Berlanti spoke to IGN earlier in the year and revealed that after bringing an alien invasion to the Arrowverse last year, they'd have to take a different approach to the crossover this year:

“Our way of making the show bigger this year was to go even more personal, so it’s a big life event for a few different people on the show… There are many life events that happen.”

When you add this to the fact that the Danvers sisters will be at the center of the crossover, it certainly brings about some interesting possibilities. Building on the suggestion that the event could take place on Earth-38, it's possible that Tyler Hoechlin's Superman could be involved — maybe even an Arrowverse "Death of Superman". What could be more personal to Kara than her only remaining family member being put into a situation that threatens his life? Still others have a happier theory and posit the crossover could revolve around wedding bells for two of the beloved characters.

Or perhaps the event which brings the Earth-1 heroes to National City is the Man of Steel being infected with red Kryptonite. Though it was manufactured by Maxwell Lord, it's not to say that another villain, possibly CADMUS, could have got their hands on some of it. Though we saw Kara and Kal fight during the Supergirl Season 2 finale, perhaps this time he is being controlled by a malevolent organization who seek to use him as a weapon to take over the world; he'd certainly be strong enough to warrant a team-up with the rest of the Arrowverse. Any one of the above scenarios could find the #DCTV crossover week set on Earth-38.
