Could We See an Ultimate Edition of 'Suicide Squad'?

There were so many scenes left out of 'Suicide Squad', that we wonder if there will be an inclusive, Ultimate Edition released.

Suicide Squad is barely in movie theaters, yet it has already set the internet ablaze, as if the film itself had El Diablo’s (Jay Hernandez) pyrokinetic abilities. It's decidedly mixed reviews are causing quite the stir. The Marvel/DC fan war is back in full swing, as is the fans/critics conflict, with petitions (and devoted Twitter accounts) calling for Rotten Tomatoes to be squashed.

But whilst it’s proving to be as divisive as Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad isn't without its redeeming moments – particularly scenes with certain characters.

No laughing matter...

Along with Will Smith’s Deadshot and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, everyone seems to like Jared Leto’s Joker (well, everyone except Devin Faraci) who, from the sound of things, steals every scene that he’s in. However, if the reviews are anything to go by, Leto’s Joker only appears sporadically, although, apparently, this was not always the case. According to the Dallas Buyers Club actor "there [were originally] a lot [more] scenes...” Indeed, in an interview with Telestar, he admitted that:

“There are a lot of scenes that didn’t make it to the final film”

From what several fans have claimed online, his overall screen time is similar to that of Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War... so, not that much then. Moreover, one of these deleted scenes that he mentions is apparently a roadside argument between the Clown Prince of Crime, and a certain Doctor Harleen Quinzell (pre-acid vat).

Unfortunately, this only generates more questions. From the reviews so far, Leto's Joker has little to do with the rest of the cast, so has this been discarded from the final product as well? And is it a similar situation with Deadshot, Killer Croc or even Batman? We can't help but wonder how much more footage litters the cutting-room floor...

Plus, with Suicide Squad's middling reception, could DC release the footage as deleted scenes on DVD, or will they, as an apology to the fans, release some sort of Ultimate Edition like they did with Batman v Superman?

Slice n' dice!

Overall, this is pretty saddening to hear, especially when it’s clear that Leto is really keen on the role, and proud of his work in the movie. After all, he did state that:

It’s likely that the fans won’t be happy to hear that they have been denied the chance to see more of the fan-favorite character. But maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised. The reduction of Joker's screen time seems to be symptomatic of the various problems which plagued the movie. These included tension between the executives, rushing for deadlines and the existence of two cuts: David Ayer’s darker, yet sleeker version and the executives’ hastily re-shot funnier version.

Indeed, with these behind-the-scenes issues being hung out to dry so soon, it looks set to become this years’ version of Fan4stic... albeit a less hated one.

"The joke's on you, Batman!"

Nevertheless, could the final movie have benefited from more Joker? At this point, without seeing the movie - and the deleted scenes themselves - it’s pure speculation and hard to gauge. Yet it’s safe to say that more of Leto would have added a bit more craziness and unpredictability to the movie... if his on-set antics are anything to go by, that is!

But never fear! It seems that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Leto. After all, he’s confirmed that he will be returning to the DCEU, and he’s openly requested to work on a movie opposite our current Caped Crusader, Ben Affleck. Plus he’s expressed an interest in seeing these deleted scenes back in Suicide Squad:

“...hopefully they will see the light of day. Who knows.”

Looking ahead...

Could David Ayer’s original vision be released some way down the line? It’s not unheard of for directors to get their delayed say on how the movie should run, After all, it's happened with many other films such as Superman II and Blade Runner. Or could we perhaps see some sort of "Joker Cut" similar to the "Rogue Cut" of X-Men: Days of Future Past?

Either way, the fate of the deleted Joker scenes- along with the fate of Suicide Squad and the DCEU at large- remains unknown. Only time will tell.
