We're two seasons into the adventures of Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), and fans simply can't get enough of the character! Daredevil Season 2 was a hit, so much so that it inspired a spinoff Punisher series that's currently in production.

But, way back at SDCC 2016, Marvel and Netflix revealed that the Man Without Fear himself would be returning to action. Now, finally, Daredevil Season 3 is officially due to start filming later this year!

Here's What We Know

Marvel and Netflix have kept pretty quiet about Daredevil Season 3 since SDCC 2016; we were told that the show was "coming soon," but it quickly became apparent that the companies had their own definition of "soon." 2017 will see Charlie Cox reprise his role in #TheDefenders, but instead of starting filming on Daredevil Season 3, Marvel has prioritized Jessica Jones Season 2. Daredevil fans were understandably a little disappointed (even though we're definitely looking forward to more Jessica Jones).

Now, though — at long last — we have official confirmation that Daredevil Season 3 is due to start filming later this year. In a recent radio interview, Charlie Cox revealed:

"I do that later in the year. We’ll go back and do that."

It's exciting news, and indicates just how popular a character Daredevil is. Think about it: between three seasons of Daredevil and the team-up Defenders, the Man Without Fear will have been a continual presence in Marvel's Netflix world since 2015. Every year will have seen Charlie Cox's Daredevil don the mask and kick ass in his own inimitable style.

What Are Fans Expecting?

Daredevil Season 2 left us in a fascinating place, but in truth much of that will be explored in The Defenders. There's a direct through-line between Daredevil Season 2, Iron Fist and The Defenders — particularly when it comes to the Hand.

In fact, The Defenders is deliberately set just a couple of months after the events of Daredevil Season 2, which ensures that Daredevil's grief over Elektra's death is still raw and painful. So the Hand arc, not to mention Elektra's ominous resurrection, will likely be completed in The Defenders.

But Daredevil Season 2 set up some other major arcs, too. Most notably, it featured the unexpected return of Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin. Even in jail, the Kingpin is a force to be reckoned with — and it's pretty certain he's planning to seek a bloody revenge. The most logical approach would be to base Season 3 on the famous "Born Again" arc.

In this arc, the Kingpin discovered Daredevil's identity — and destroyed Matt Murdock's life. He was like a chess grandmaster playing against a child; little by little, piece by piece, Matt Murdock lost everything he cared about. He wound up destitute, homeless, battered and broken. And, secure behind bars and without Daredevil even realizing what was happening, the Kingpin watched with joy.

Here's the thing, though: as horrific as all that sounds, "Born Again" comes to a triumphant close. It ends with a note of optimism, as Matt Murdock rebuilds his life.

Now, don't get me wrong; "Born Again" will need some serious adjusting. I doubt we'll see Deborah Ann Woll's Karen Page play out her comic book role; in the comics, she's responsible for the tragedy, selling Matt's secret identity for drugs. What's more, Ben Urich played a major role in helping Matt get his life together in the comics, but that character — played so well by Vondie Curtis-Hall in Daredevil Season 1 — has already been killed off.

For all that it would need adapting, though, I personally think this is the direction the show should take.

So there we have it, Marvel fans! Daredevil Season 3 is due to start filming later this year, suggesting it will indeed release in 2018. Now we know for sure that we'll soon be returning to the world of Marvel's Man Without Fear — and there'll be the (Dare)devil to pay!
