DC Universe Roku Review

Frustrating but Gratifying

DC Universe officially launched on 9/15, Batman day! DC Universe is currently offered at two different price points, $7.99 a month, or $74.99 for a one year subscription which is a savings of 20% versus the monthly plan. When DC Universe was first announced during Comic-Con, they introduced a plan for $74.99 for 15-months instead of the standard $74.99 12-month plan. I was a little worried placing $74.99 down on an app that still had not been released, but I took the leap. I figured $74.99 for 15 months turns out to be $4.99 a month, a savings of $3.00 a month over the standard monthly plan, what a deal.

Luckily, I can say that so far the price has been more than worth it and my gamble seems to be paying off. I primarily view DC Universe through one of my three Roku devices at home. The review below is based strictly off the Roku device. While I have more frustrations listed than gratifications, I do not think this product is bad. It is just easier to list things you do not like sometimes than things you do.

Frustrations:

  • During the first few days of launch, I opened up three separate bugs. All three tickets were resolved within 24/48 hours. My first ticket was for the movie category missing, the second one was for The Death of Superman movie not playing, and the third one was for Superman the Animated Series missing all its episodes.
  • Roku device is missing options that the DC Universe App has on my phone. Missing are the Encyclopedia, Community, Shop, and News. This is a huge miss for the app right now. Not sure why DC Universe is not including half their content.
  • Is there a way to remove the “Dive Back In” selections? It is a good idea in theory, but I do not want to dive back into an episode I already finished. Same thing goes for the comics I already read, why are they still on my main page?
  • I wish DC Universe would adopt the Netflix technology of being able to skip the introduction to a TV show. While Batman the Animated Series is a beautifully done introduction, I do not need to watch the one-minute title sequence each time.
  • My biggest gripe comes when I have to fast forward or rewind a show. Not being able to preview what clip you are forwarding/rewinding is a huge pain. Reminds me of the good old VHS tapes and playing roulette anytime you wanted to get to a certain scene in a movie. I hope they upgrade this very soon.

Gratifications:

  • The comic reader on the television is great. The art pops off the screen; I am noticing details on comics I read many times before for the first time.
  • The content selection is great! From comics, tv, animated, movies, and even specials. DC Universe did a good job choosing the right mix of old and new that represents them perfectly.
  • The new series coming out all sound great. I never would have thought that in a million years there would be a Start Girl series. I cannot wait for their next announcement.
  • DC Daily is a great place to get the latest DC news while putting on an entertaining show.

DC Universe is giving me everything I could have asked for albeit with a few early frustrations. While the Roku version of the app is not perfect yet, I am sure that they are working hard to get it there. Thank you DC Universe for the hours of entertainment currently available and to the hours of entertainment that is coming our way.
