Did Edgar Wright Foreshadow Baby's Career As A Race Car Driver At The End Of 'Baby Driver'?

While a happy ending was waiting for Baby in the end, I think some further closure can be found if we dive deeper into some of the more subtle scenes that could foreshadow Baby's future.

Warning: Spoilers for Baby Driver will follow

Baby Driver became the sleeper hit of the summer earning an impressing 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and countless happy moviegoers around the world clamouring to see the dynamic #action film. Edgar Wright birthed a movie that made audiences laugh, cry and want to see more from the interesting characters. Every character in the movie was fleshed out and had their own motivations and characteristics, but none character was more beloved than Ansel Elgort's Baby, though.

Baby is a victim of unfortunate circumstances and spends the entire film trying to pay off debts to Kevin Spacey's Doc by being his driver on crime jobs. Throughout the film Baby displays just how powerful he is behind the wheel of a car and that he has natural talent, which is why Doc is was attracted to his skill set in the first place. While a happy ending was waiting for Baby in the end, I think some further closure can be found if we dive deeper into some of the more subtle scenes that could foreshadow Baby's future.

I believe that Wright added small hints in the film to give us a glimpse of Baby's true fate and continuation after the film ended. Through my sleuthing, I have concluded that Baby went on to travel the country with Debora while using his driving abilities to spread joy through auto racing.

Despite what some might think of auto racing, it is a highly marketable and profitable sport — yes it is a sport — that can provide a steady income and a life of travel to drivers who are lucky enough to join up with the right team.

What hints were dropped?

His driving spreading joy to others.

Baby is a talented driver, easily putting Brian Conners and Dom Toretto to shame, and his foster father Joseph even recognizes this. When Baby initially pays of his debt to Doc and is trying to decide where to go next with his life, Joseph tells him he should use his talent to bring joy to people.

While this turned into Baby getting a job as a delivery boy and bringing joy to people through pizza, I'm pretty sure that wasn't his exact idea he had in mind. What profession allows a driver to use his abilities to bring joy to people? The sport where people literally pay money to go watch men and woman drive, of course. Auto racing.

Is that probably what Joseph had in mind exactly? Probably not, but it is still one of the first jobs that crossed my mind when he said it. Only a small hint though.

Baby, Debora, Music and The Open Road

Baby and Debora are constantly wishing to leave on their own grand adventure, just driving wherever the road took them. Sounds like a great life, but how are two young adults in their early twenties supposed to just live their lives on the road without jobs? Yes, Baby received a large sum of money from Doc before he and Debora depart but they're far too young to be able to live off that money for the rest of their lives, especially if they're constantly on the move. Unless they play the stock market, they'll eventually need to get jobs.

Auto racing like many sports requires a lot of traveling from track to track, and in many cases, traveling across America. Seems like the perfect job for a man with incredible driving talent and a thirst for constantly being on the road.

At this point all I've given you is pure speculation. This is all circumstantial but there is one piece of evidence that ties this whole thing into a nice bow.

The prison TV was broadcasting racing.

While Baby was serving his five years in prison, we got an interesting shot of him watching TV in jail. That shot? An oddly specific moment of a dirt race going on that goes on for a solid second. I believe that this was thrown in as a big hint from Edgar Wright foreshadowing Baby's future endeavors.

While I guess it could've just been used as a device to show how much Baby misses driving, there are so many other examples of driving that could've been used. Showing dirt racing on the television was just too random and unnecessary for it not to have some kind of meaning, especially with a storyteller like Wright behind the camera.

Again it's speculation, but it's not so much of grasping at straws now.

Conclusion

Am I giving you a completely undeniable evidence of Baby's fate? No, but I think these three tidbits give you a picture of what exactly Wright's future for Baby would be if the camera stayed rolling. It's all about foreshadowing and finding the little details in the film. At the end of the day, Baby would have to get a job at some point in his life and becoming a race car driver seems like the most plausible occupation for a man of his skill.

It doesn't seem likely that we will get a sequel to Baby Driver and honestly I don't think we need one. Edgar Wright told a beautiful story that ended the way it should have, but it's nice to think about what happens to characters after the film has ended.

Whether this was Wright's intentions, or this is just a case of a moviegoer digging to deep into a #fantheory to try and grab onto some closure, it's still a sold idea to believe in if you find yourself wondering what happens to Baby and Debora in the end.
