Did Jerry Get His Mother Pregnant?

I want to be a filmmaker and I watched Cucumber and Banana on Channel 4 and was inspired by an episode starring two characters talking about a screwdriver being shoved in an inappropriate place.

My tutor showed us a film, a collection of short conversation pieces and they were boring. Nobody in the class enjoyed watching them. When someone complained, he said "but that's because you haven't seen a conversation piece before" but I had, with Cucumber - an eight minute episode by Russell T Davies. My tutor said "if you can write a conversation piece that keeps the audience mesmerised, then you are a great writer", so I put that to the test and wrote my own one.

It's set in a cafe, like the Cucumber episode and like the shorts my tutor showed us and also sharing similarities, they have two characters too, so I thought that will be easy. With two characters, a cafe as a location, it meant I needed a good story that will not bore the audience. Cucumber was so obscure, it kept me, as a viewer, interested in the episode, because of what they were talking about. It was disgusting and rude and while I was watching, I was able to picture vivid images I knew I would have to do the same because if I wrote a script like the films my tutor made us watch, everyone would find it boring.

I didn't know where to begin with this story so I decided to sleep on it, but as I laid my head on my pillow, I was flooded with ideas about masterbation and what if scenarios. What if my character masterbated in the bath, left his sperm behind and got his mother pregnant. But then I kept thinking that it's impossible for that to work, and then that's when I came up with the title DID JERRY - because it's about whether or not Jerry really did get his mother pregnant.

I decided to play on the different scenarios, so Jerry got off in the bathtub, what if it was possible to get someone pregnant that way? Then what if her mother got pregnant by a black man and then it's not Jerry's. But if that baby comes out white then it could be a mix up in the sperm, or sometimes an interracial couple have a pure white baby because of the genes - it's very common in twins but it also happens for a single baby - but then what if it is actually Jerry's baby?

In my filmmaking course, we had a script read through and this script was read. We were all 18 and above in my class so we were all adults and even my tutor was there, they read out the scene description while I read the part of Jerry and someone read the role of Kimberly.

The entire room was full of giggles and laughter and when I, as Jerry, read out the line, "but what if I did get my mum pregnant?", people were like, "that will never happen" or "it doesn't work that way" but it was not about that, and as everyone soon discovered, it's questioning if Jerry got his mother pregnant, not concluding it.

So I hope by publishing it on here, many people will read it and like the story. Even though people liked it, we never filmed it and filming it is something I would like to do.
