Did 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Just Destroy All Hope for the X-force Movie?

Will we see X-Force on film one day? My hopes are fading away because of 'X-Men: Apocalypse'.

For a long time, we've all been waiting and hoping to enjoy an X-Force movie, and although there have been rumors and whispers for a few years it seems like we never really get any closer to an actual movie. Recently there have been a few rumblings about the movie and I thought I'd break it all down for everyone, so let's start at the beginning.

2013

This was our first real glimmer of hope for an X-Force movie when Jeff Wadlow was hired by 20th Century Fox to write the screenplay and possibly helm the film as director. It was an exciting time, especially with Wadlow being attached to pen, since he was both writer and director of Kick-Ass 2 and attached to two films for next year: The Hitman's Bodyguard (Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds) and The True Memoirs of an International Assassin (Kevin James, Genesis Rodriguez).

Rob Liefeld, creator of X-Force was able to read the first draft of the script and called it "beyond impressive." He even went on to reveal a few tidbits about the film, saying that it brought in the...

"...camaraderie between the team as they learn to cope and trust one another."

And even more exciting, Liefeld added that:

"there are at least 4 sequences that long time fans of X-Force, Cable and Deadpool will scream in absolute delight! #wadlownailedit."

2014

There were a few hints at the script and the characters, but we always knew that the film wouldn't be focused on until X-Men: Days of Future Past was released. We've been holding our breath as we waited for the green light on X-Force, but then the Deadpool test footage leak happened and look what we have coming on the fast-track: an extremely anticipated feature film with our favorite fourth wall-breaking Merc with a Mouth.

2015

This was the year of preparation, we've been waiting for something on the X-Force, but all the other X projects were being fast-tracked and greenlit before we could even catch our breath. After X-Men: Days of Future Past succeeded in traveling into the past and altering the future, our hopes of an X-Force film seemed slimmer and slimmer by the moment. We got to see our beloved Warpath on screen, but that was about it. With its success it was apparent that 20th Century wanted to ride the momentum right into X-Men: Apocalypse and we will see it hit theaters in May of 2016.

Rob Liefeld returned with a couple comments today that have led fans to believe that the film is officially off the slate at 20th Century Fox. Here's what he had to say on Twitter:

So does that mean that all hope is lost? The script is obsolete since X-Men: Apocalypse has apparently made the script worthless?

Not long after Liefeld's comment hit, this brilliant work by conceptual artist Gregory Semkow surfaced and we have a vision of what that original script from 2013 was set to look like, and it's glorious! Semkow even called the original script "freaking badass!" Based on what we see below, Wadlow's X-Force would include Cable, Domino, Warpath, Cannonball and a mystery fifth member (appearing to be Rogue).

That's awesome right? Maybe this art surfaced again because it's still in the works and Wadlow is just re-tooling the idea.

It doesn't appear to be that way, with Liefeld putting another nail in the X-Force coffin with the following comment, again on twitter:

I'm still holding out hope that we can find the X-Force on film in the near future, but my hopes are slowly fading away. There is always a glimmer of hope though, and possibly this image that has resurfaced will spark enough interest from fans that 20th Century Fox will greenlight and fast-track the project like they did with the leaked Deadpool footage.
