Disney continues on its mission to bring their classic tales to life with more big budget live action iterations. Following in the successful footsteps of other classic live action remakes like Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp is the latest to be added to the production list.

Disney has already stated that other classic remakes like Peter Pan, Sword in the Stone, Tinker Bell, The Lion King, and Aladdin are planned, but it seems that Lady and the Tramp will trump a few of these to the production post.

The remake has been assigned to Ninjago’s Director, Charlie Bean, who is reportedly working on the preparation alongside Andrew Bujalski, who is already finalising on the script.

Regarded as one of Disney’s finest movies by fans and critics alike, this timeless classic, first released back in 1955, has been warming the hearts of millions of children and grownups the world over ever since.

Lady and The Tramp was Disney’s 15th animated movie and weaves a tail of romance that follows an upper class cocker spaniel, named Lady, who meets a street mongrel named Tramp. They go on adventures around the town and end up falling in love. A classic love affair—there’s also spaghetti.

With the movie solely focused on the dogs (even the supporting cast are dogs), I am not sure how they plan to do the filming. The assumption is that it will follow a similar protocol to Beauty and the Beast and will splice CGI in with live film. Exciting times ahead.

So far, some of the live action remakes have been copy and paste representations, and others have been based on either origin stories or even subplot focused. What the remake has in store for Lady and her tramp is still unknown, but I think a direct remake for this classic would be best.

So far, we have seen great success from recent re-releases of classic Disney titles. Beauty and the Beast smashed the box office and set a record breaking $170 million opening weekend.

Jeff Bock, an industry analyst from Exhibitor Relations, said “I don’t know if they made a deal with the devil, but Disney is an awfully potent empire right now. You continue to shake your head and roll your eyes, but they can do no wrong right now and that has all the other studios salivating.”

Will Lady and the Tramp garner a similar audience on the opening weekend, or is it a little too classic? Do kids now-a-days still watch the older classics?

Beauty and the Beast is not alone in this. Alice in Wonderland has, to date, earned over $1 billion worldwide; Cinderella has cashed in over$543.5 million and The Jungle Book, totals (and sis still going) $966.6 million.

This is a lucrative area, and with such an incredible library to choose from, it makes sense to keep on churning out and re-inventing the characters and the stories. These stories span the generations. They are nostalgic brilliance for the older generation who all undoubtedly grew up watching them, and they are all-new wonderful adventures for the youngsters of today who are experiencing all of this for the first time. It is a wonderful world of adventure that we can all dive into, and with the pipeline that has been announced that covers all the greatest Disney titles, we certainly have a wonderfully exciting time ahead that will see more and more of our old-time favourites brought to life in brilliant live-action style. Not only that but these titles will always attract the best talent so quality end product is never an issue.
