What Is 'Doctor Who' About?

First broadcast in 1963, Doctor Who is officially the longest-running science fiction TV programme ever! The show follows the exploits of an extraterrestrial & ever-eccentric adventurer called "The Doctor", who comes from the planet Gallifrey. As a Time Lord, each version of the Doctor has the ability to regenerate their body when they are mortally wounded — but when they do so, a new appearance and personality is gained!

Exploring the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS (which takes the form of a British police box), the Doctor combats deadly foes and injustice wherever he/she goes, with a host of (usually) human companions.

2017's all-new series of Doctor Who began on the 15th April and regretfully concluded on 1st July; thankfully there's also a Christmas Special coming up. Entitled Twice Upon A Time, the special is scheduled for the usual broadcast on 25th December! And it will feature the return of a very special someone...

— Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor: One of the toughest and most irascible incarnations of the Doctor yet, Series 10 has been Capaldi's last series in the role, and as ever, he's been amazing!

— David Bradley as the First Doctor: Initially played by William Hartnell, and then Richard Hurndall, David Bradley now assumes the role of the Doctor's first, cantankerous incarnation for the Christmas special, following his amazing performance as William Hartnell in the 2013 documentary/drama An Adventure In Time and Space.

— Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts: Bold and quick-witted, Bill was an instant success as soon she debuted in Peter Capaldi's last full series. It's quite surprising that she's returning once again in Twice Upon A Time, given how her story ended in the season finale.

— Mark Gatiss as The Captain: He's both written for - and starred in - Doctor Who several times already, but it seems that Gatiss will appear once again, only this time he's a mysterious World War One soldier.

When Peter Capaldi announced that he was leaving Doctor Who, Whovians and the internet at large revived one of their favorite lines of speculation: who could play the Doctor next?

But our speculation ended on the 16th July 2017, when the BBC announced that Jodie Whittaker — of Broadchurch, Black Mirror and Attack the Block fame — will be handed the keys to the TARDIS in the upcoming Christmas special.

The Doctor is a particularly problematic, and paradoxical part to cast. World-weary yet youthful, otherworldly yet relatable, the character has attracted a very versatile and popular crop of thespians in the past, who each have been able to brilliantly demonstrate these necessary qualities. In light of her previous performances, Whittaker is clearly more than up to the task; we here at Movie Pilot wish her every success in the role!
