Don Hemingway Review
While Jude Law shines, the script is his own worst enemy here as he takes the dialogue above what it’s worth. Here the performances elevate the material.

Dom Hemingway is one of the world’s finest safe crackers, and if you ask him… the finest. However, he’s just gotten finished with a 12-year stint for not ratting on crime boss Ivan Fontaine, who is indebted to Dom for his service. Sadly while he was in jail, Dom’s daughter became an adult, and a mother and his loving wife got with another man before dying of cancer. All of these actions have made Dom a bitter bitter man, one hell bent on getting his money and possibly driving himself into a coma.
What We Think
Law goes on ahead and feast on every scene he’s in, but the supporting cast isn’t all that strong. Outside of Clarke who shows us a side we don’t see of Game of Thrones (and considering that show there isn’t many sides we haven’t seen) her scorned anger toward her father is palpable. Richard Grant’s Dickie is also an interesting character. I just feel like there was no explanation of his history with Dom, nor any other pertinent info on him so he lacked importance.
Our Grade: C-

Some interesting shots can’t cover for the milk toast writing and loose ends that Shepard doesn’t bother to tie up. Dom Hemingway opened in 2013 in EXTREMELY limited release (4 theaters to count).

Locke Review
Title: LockeMPAA Rating: RDirector: Steven KnightStarring: Tom HardyRuntime: 1 hr 25 mins What It Is: Ivan Locke is just 9 hours away from not only the biggest job of his life, but one unexpected call throws everything into a looping mess. As we see the events of his life unfold, we see Locke creeping ever towards something different than the man we originally meet at the film's beginning. This is a very interesting film in that we only ever see one actor on screen the entire film. All his dialogue throughout is performed through Locke’s Bluetooth, which is connected to his car's stereo. As this night unfolds were unsure if Locke is holding onto his sanity, and I have just been on the edge of mania.

The Pearl by John Steinbeck
‘The Pearl’ is a well-known by under-read classic and, as a teacher, many of my students have absolutely loved it. Not just because it is short, but because it presents a storyline that is interesting and corrupting. Easy to read and easier to analyse, ‘The Pearl’ is one of Steinbeck’s hardest hitting classics with an underlying message about protecting what is actually important. By the end of the book, the reader is left defeated and believing in the wrong thing. The idealism around this book is incredible and it is so dark too. For a long while you are supporting the wrong people, thinking in the wrong way and the whole story becomes one long act of misdirection by Steinbeck to show in a ‘Monkey’s Paw’ fashion why we should never chase wealth and status.
