Everything You Need to Know About 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout'

What's done is done when we say it's done.

I haven't written about it, but I am a pretty big fan of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Well, to be more honest, I'm a bigger fan of the more recent MI movies. The first two sucked.

And since Mission: Impossible – Fallout is coming out pretty soon, I decided to do some frame-by-frame analyses of the trailers in order to get a good idea of what'll happen, and I'll be giving you a bunch of information you should know before diving into the upcoming Tom Cruise action blockbuster.

So here we go!

Mission: Impossible – Fallout is the sixth film in the MI franchise. The film was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who was also the writer and director of the previous film, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

The cast of the film is as follows:

  • Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt
  • Henry Cavill as August Walker
  • Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell
  • Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn
  • Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust
  • Sean Harris as Solomon Lane
  • Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley
  • Angela Bassett as Erica Sloane
  • Vanessa Kirby as White Widow
  • Michelle Monaghan as Julia Meade-Hunt

Cruise, Rhames, Pegg, Ferguson, Harris, and Baldwin are all reprising their roles from previous installments, with Cavill, Bassett, and Kirby portraying original characters.

Monaghan is also returning to the role of Julia, Ethan's wife. This is her first time playing Julia since her role in Mission: Impossible III and her brief cameo in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

A character that had previously appeared in Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation that will not be returning in Fallout is William Brandt, portrayed by Jeremy Renner.

Renner couldn't appear in the film because he had to film scenes for Avengers: Infinity War, yet they cut him from the film anyway. So, Marvel essentially just f**ked us Mission: Impossible fans. I kind of hate them now, since I love Brandt.

In the film, an IMF mission goes badly and Lane, who we had previously seen get imprisoned at the end of Rogue Nation, escapes custody. The CIA begins to question Ethan's motives, as he finds himself in the middle of a global catastrophe.

And now, for a frame-by-frame trailer analysis of the first official trailer.

We start off with some pretty nice-looking shots that have me confident about McQuarrie's directing ability.

In the background, you hear Lane's voice say, "Your mission, should you choose to accept it. I wonder, did you ever choose not to?"

The thing is, I highly doubt that Lane, the main antagonist of Rogue Nation, will be the one to deliver Ethan's assignment, telling him his "mission, should [he] choose to accept it."

This is, of course, gonna be the scene in which Ethan finds out his mission, and the moment you see above is the smoke after the message self-destructs.

Out of all the MI movies, I'd say this "this message will self-destruct in five seconds" scene bears the most resemblance to the one in Mission: Impossible III. And throughout the trailer, I'd say there are some more similarities to the third installment.

In this scene, Ethan enters a dark room with a gun, presumably on the IMF mission that ends badly.

He looks very different from how he did in Rogue Nation

He tells Ethan, "The end you've always feared is coming, and the blood will be on your hands. The fallout of all your good intentions." I suppose, like the premises in the first and fourth film, Ethan will be accused of something he isn't responsible for, and must prove his innocence.

Also, he appears to be held captive by the IMF, and I think they're about to inject him with something lethal. Lane was the main villain of Rogue Nation and something MI movies have NEVER done is keep a villain for more than one movie. So, I'm thinking Lane is gonna die here.

Throughout the trailer, we get two quotes. The first is from Hunley, who tells Ethan, "You had a terrible choice to make in Berlin; one life over millions. Now, the world is at risk."

The second is from Sloane, who says, "This is the CIA's mission. If he had held onto the plutonium, we wouldn't be having this conversation."

Okay, so, here's what I think is gonna happen. At the beginning of the film, Ethan and his team will be trying to recover plutonium in order to stop an atomic bomb from being made. However, Ethan decides to grab Lane and ends up losing the plutonium in the process.

Since the villains of the movie have the plutonium, they intend on using it to make a bomb. Or maybe the villains will just use the plutonium to provide their DeLoreans with 1.21 gigawatts of electricity. I'm sorry. I had to say it.

The MI movies usually take place in international locations. It seems pretty clear that a large portion of this movie will take place in Paris, as we see the Eiffel Tower multiple times in the trailers.

And here, we see Ethan, Benji, and Luther on a boat that appears to be underground, or at least in a dark location.

"You need to walk away."

"Please don't make me go through you."

Despite Ethan and Ilsa's hug at the end of Rogue Nation, it appears that the two of them will have a slightly tense relationship in this one. This may be a result of disagreements or the fact that Ethan appears to have been disavowed again.

In this scene, we see August say to Sloane, "How many times has Hunt's government betrayed him, disavowed him, cast him aside? How long before a man like that has had enough?"

Now, I think Ethan will actually have had enough in this movie, and from the next scene, this seems like it will almost definitely be the case.

Ethan sees Ilsa in front of his car on her motorcycle and proceeds to drive forward, hitting her with his car. And WOW. This is gonna be a really dark side of Ethan Hunt.

In these shots, we have Ethan climbing a rock face. And this scene reminds me a lot of Ethan's introduction scene in Mission: Impossible 2, when Ethan was free solo climbing in Utah.

Now, I don't believe that he was just climbing for fun here. I think he was either trying to reach the top of the rock, or he had fallen off the rock and was trying to get back up, but ultimately failed.

"Ethan, that's not who we are."

In this shot, Ethan is about to attack a woman in a hospital bed. It's unclear who he's about to attack or why he's doing it. But he looks PISSED OFF in this scene.

Luther has to hold him back in this scene, and this reminds me of Mission: Impossible 3, when Ethan was threatening to throw Davian off the plane, and Luther had to stop him.

And in this shot, we have a pretty intense car scene. Ethan's spinning the car, with Luther and August in the back seat. There's someone in the passenger seat who is masked. If I had to guess who that was, I'd say it's Lane.

Now, let's do the next trailer.

So, one of the shots we get is this.

From what it looks like, the plutonium WAS gonna be used for a bomb. My hypothesis is further solidified by the next screenshot.

In the background, you can see what appears to say "THREE NUCLEAR ATTACKS". So, the premise for this movie seems like it'll be at least somewhat similar to the one in Ghost Protocol.

We hear Sloane say, "Solomon Lane escaped in Paris," and this, I believe is Lane's escape. The police truck holding Lane gets rammed into the water, and Lane's henchmen grab Lane from underwater.

We have a pretty nice-looking action scene in the trailer where it appears that Ethan and August are teaming up to fight an Asian bad guy.

The clip is available online, but I'm not gonna watch it. I want to stay surprised for when I watch it in theaters.

In this trailer, we get a little more insight on who August Walker is, portrayed by the legendary Henry Cavill.

We hear Luther say, "He's not just some observer. He's an assassin." And we hear Hunley say to Ethan, "You go rogue? He's been ordered to hunt you down and kill you."

And I believe Ethan WILL go rogue in this movie, and August will spend the film hunting Ethan down. Yeah. You heard me. Superman is gonna be the main villain of Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

No hard feelings.

Anyways, I'd say that's all I have to say about this movie. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!
