'Fantastic Beasts' Theory: Did Newt Scamander Give Aragog to Hagrid?!

The Pocket of a Traveler...

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is coming in just a few short months, and while we wait, I thought it would be fun to share you one of my favorite and most brilliant fan theories.

This theory was created by YouTuber Seamus Gorman, and I'll leave a link to his video at the end of the article. But basically, if you like anything I write about, whether it's Pixar, Harry Potter, Star Wars, or anything, you should go check him out.

So, what we first need to establish before delving into this theory is that Newt Scamander and Hagrid have a bunch of similarities.

I mean, they're both interested in magical creatures, they were both expelled from Hogwarts, but their expulsions were argued against by Dumbledore, and neither Newt nor Hagrid actually committed the crime that got them expelled.

And given how similar they are and the fact that they lived throughout the same time period, it's likely that they knew each other.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, when Harry is looking at the Marauder's Map, he sees Newt Scamander in Hogwarts.

Now, what was Newt doing in Hogwarts at the age of 96? Well, we see Newt on the map the same year that Hagrid becomes the professor of Care of Magical Creatures.

And during Hagrid's lessons, he shows the class a lot of animals, from Hippogriffs to Blast-Ended Skrewts to Flobberworms. Where is Hagrid getting these animals? Well, we can assume that they were loaned to him by his lifelong friend, Newt.

And in Harry Potter and theGoblet of Fire, Hagrid gives a lesson in the class on Nifflers, and we know FOR SURE that Newt has some Nifflers in his suitcase.

So, yes. Newt and Hagrid MAY have known each other. It's definitely possible.

But now, let's go to Aragog.

Where did Aragog come from, and how did Hagrid come into possession of him? In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Aragog tells Harry and Ron this:

"I come from a distant land. A traveller gave me to Hagrid when I was an egg."

Now, whoever this traveler was must have been very interested in fantastic beasts, if he's come into possession of an Acromantula egg, which can only usually be found on the island of Borneo. And who could have given this egg to Hagrid?

This makes even more sense when you watch the teaser for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Newt and Dumbledore are clearly friends in this film, which takes place in 1927. Hagrid receives the egg in 1942, and given that we see Hogwarts in this trailer, it's not a stretch at all to think that Newt could have visited the school, noticed Hagrid's interest with magical creatures, and entrusted him with the Acromantula.

Because it's never stated why some random traveler would just give a Hogwarts student an Acromantula egg. But if Newt is giving the egg to Hagrid, a student of one of Newt's friends (Dumbledore), then it makes much more sense.

Also, the Fantastic Beasts series will end in the year 1945, so I really hope that in, I don't know, Fantastic Beasts 4, we'll be able to see Newt meet Hagrid and see him give Aragog to Hagrid.

But anyway, that's just a very interesting theory that I wanted to share with you guys. And like I said earlier, this theory was created by Seamus Gorman, so if you want, check out his channel, and this is his video on the theory.

So, what do you guys think? Personally, I really like this theory, and I hope that we can receive confirmation from J.K. Rowling in the future.
