The Making of a Hero

The guy who was standing in the room with me was my age, yet he had won numerous awards, went to medical school, and was nominated for a Nobel Prize. His blonde hair was a mess, but it looked natural, his eyes were hidden behind square glasses, and his physique was thin, but he must work out because I could see his muscles through his long sleeve shirt.

"Okay, so can I just get you to put this on," he said and he handed me a heavy shirt. "It's for the scans," he explained.

"Oh right," I said and I put it over my head. The weight then pulled my body to the ground. Trevor helped me up while he laughed at me.

"Sorry, it's heavier than the usual x-ray shirts," he said. Then he directed me to a machine and I had my arms out and then back in and then I turned around and did the same.

"Okay, so your body looks normal, as in human—nothing really special there," he said as he was looking down into his screen. I stepped out of the machine and took off the x-ray shirt.

Then I heard something; it was coming from the walls or somewhere. I looked around trying to find the source of the noise. Then it got louder and it was more of a whisper.

"Hey, Asmerla?" asked Trevor.

"Yeah? I just hear something, don't worry about it," I told him.

"Okay, that is how you ended up here, so I do need to worry about it," said Trevor.

"Is it a voice?" he asked and I tried to listen again, but it was gone.

"Sorry, it disappeared," I replied. Then Trevor's eyes started darting back and forth as if he was doing math or seeing physics problems in the air with his eyes.

"I think I know what your issue is... come with me," he said and he pulled me by the arm and brought me to another room which was down the hall from the room, which we were in. He then put me in a chair and stuck on a few stickers on my head; there were no wires attached to them.

"These are wireless so you can move around and stuff. I designed it myself," he said proudly. He then turned on the screen that was mounted on the wall.

"Okay, now you need to concentrate. Try and imagine the voices you were hearing and hopefully something will come up on the screen," he said and Trevor started tapping the screen and moving things around; I tried to pay attention to what he was touching, but he moved quickly through the screen. In the movies, he taps screens and moves digital objects around. Trevor was completely focused on the screen.

"Okay, now try to think about what you heard the first time the headache happened," he instructed and I closed my eyes trying to think about the terrifying moment where I heard the whispers. I started to hear a soft sound and then eventually it started to grow and they turned into whispers, then the whispers grew louder. It was attacking my head. I could see Trevor doing something but I could not pay attention to what was happening around me because of the voices in my head.

"Concentrate!" I heard him yell.

"I'm trying," I shouted back.

"Focus on one!" he shouted. I tried to block them.

"You can do this. Just focus on one and it will pop up on the screen and then I can figure out the algorithm of what your brain is doing. Man, you might be able to read minds," I heard him say, but his lips were not moving.

"What did you say?" I asked him.

"Nothing," answered Trevor.

"No. You said I can figure out the algorithm of what your brain is doing. Man, you might be able to read minds," I repeated.

"Yes!" he exclaimed.

"You did it! You can read minds! Holy! It worked!" He smiled and he took off the buttons from my head and put them back into a small little box that he found them in.

"I can read minds?" I asked him.

"Yeah, we just need you to be trained and then you will be golden!"

That's how I learned I could read minds. They were thoughts that I was hearing and I was not crazy!
