Four Reasons A Hogwarts School TV Series Would Be The Ideal Return To The Potterverse

The new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ends Harry Potter's adventures, according to author J.K. Rowling. "This is the next generation, you know," the author said in a recent interview. "I'm thrilled to see it realized so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now."

Harry Potter fans were dismayed. We aren't ready. No matter how long it's been, we'll never be ready to say goodbye to Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Hogwarts. But with the decision made, we have no other option but to move on...and to hope that television could take us back to Hogwarts, if not back to Harry.

And we'll look at what a Hogwarts TV series could do to develop the story.

A Hogwarts television show could focus on new students entering Hogwarts, ready to learn all the knowledge gathered by their predecessors. Though the budget would be smaller than the movies, I've no doubt television could do Hogwarts justice. We've seen other grandiose sets on TV, such as the Luther mansion in Smallville, the Queen mansion on Arrow, the international locations on Chuck, and the all of the magical wonderful sights on Merlin. So, even though television wouldn't have a lot of money to spend, producers could still create that sense of awe we got when we first saw Hogwarts.

No, there wouldn't be a big budget for stars such as Emma Thompson or Maggie Smith, although cameos would be wonderful, but Hogwarts could still have teachers with quirks and challenges. And perhaps we'd even get a look at their lives as well. Whether the Hogwarts television series would take place before Dumbledore or long after Harry, one thing is for certain, with the focus on the school, we would get much more classroom time to focus on children becoming wizards of the future.

Who didn't love those classrooms in Hogwarts? They invited curiosity and gave viewers just enough of a glimpse to want more. Whether it was Potions Class or Divination Class, the rooms were like vast libraries a person could get lost in. Imagine what could happen in those classrooms in a television series. We've had plenty of series where the focus was on a large portion of the school, but nothing would compare to Hogwarts.

No, we'll never have wizards quite like Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but watching other kids grow into their magic could be just as fun. New child actors could have a shot at becoming the television version of Harry Potter, playing with spells, potions, and wands. With the millions of Harry Potter fans who weren't ready for the movies to end, a Hogwarts television series would welcome them back to the Potterverse.

A Long Shot

The idea of a Hogwarts TV series is a long shot, though, according to brand expert and talent agent Charles Finch. Speaking to Variety, he said,

...movie spinoffs are a safer bet than a move into TV. A movie gives you a lot stronger basis to develop ancillary rights and projects, but the investment is much more significant.

A long shot is better than nothing, at least. That doesn't mean there isn't hope. Variety reported on August 6, 2016:

...the studio said Wednesday that, in relation to Rowling's "Wizarding World" brand, "There is much more on the horizon."

Harry Potter will be forever etched into our minds and hearts, but our imaginations are primed for more magic, more adventure, and, of course, more trouble. Though the faces would be different, it could still be interesting to watch new wizards trek the same halls Harry did, avoiding the staircases that couldn't be trusted, and finding mischief in the dorms. Adventure could take place inside Hogwarts each episode. Viewers now finding the Harry Potter world would be thrilled to discover a series devoted to the school where Harry Potter truly discovered who he was.
