It looks like Deadpool 2 is preparing to slice through the competition when it sticks a middle finger up in cinemas next year.

Time to pull out your katanas, because it looks like Deadpool 2 is preparing to slice through the competition when it sticks a middle finger up in cinemas next year. With a first look at Josh Brolin as the time-traveling Cable, it seems that Fox is pulling out the big guns to give us a bloody and brutal comic book adaptation for the ages.

While it once seemed like a two-horse race between the MCU and the DCEU, Fox and its small band of comic book favorites are coming from the outside. When you have the ranks of #XMen and the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, you may be able to forgive past mistakes like the Fantastic Four. However, does Fox really get credit where credit's due?

From Page To Screen

Cable creator Rob Liefeld spoke to ComicBook.com after the character reveal and discussed the current slate of the Foxverse. Keen to sing the studio's praises — he may be a bit biased — the acclaimed comic artist said that Fox should get more credit for their "faithful" comic book adaptations:

“Between Deadpool and Logan, Fox deserves to have more [credit]. You could say, ‘But Rob, they have so much [credit].’ They deserve more. And I think they keep proving it."

Liefeld is certainly right, #Deadpool and #Logan both did big things for the world of superhero movies and ushered in a more violent, R-rated era of the genre. However, that expansive Fox umbrella also owns the rest of the X-Men series and that maligned Fant4stic from 2015. Speaking about the other side of Xavier's mutants, Fox's "main" series of X-Men movies has had some brilliant highs and some loathsome lows — remember that even the recent X-Men: Apocalypse was largely slammed.

Admittedly, when you look at the Foxverse compared to, say, the MCU, it seems that they do try and take it down a route that is more rooted in source material. Disney has become great at reinventing its heroes for the candy-coated world of the MCU, but some die-hard comic book fans will always call out the differences. You have to agree with Liefeld about credit though, he is right about Deadpool and Logan taking the box office (and the critics) by storm:

"Deadpool looked like he jumped out of the comics, and was such a wonderful representation of everything I love about him. And then you saw Logan, which was the Wolverine everybody had been clamoring for. And again, these two movies with R ratings did giant box office, better than most PG-13 movies this year.”

The Fox bigwigs will undoubtedly be looking to the future with #Deadpool2, #NewMutants, and #DarkPhoenix, so let's hope we can learn from the mistakes of the past. With the hype at fever pitch surrounding Deadpool 2, let's hope that director #DavidLeitch's new production can even live up to the original, let alone surpass it.

It is a strange state of affairs with Deadpool — especially if you consider his diabolical arrival in X-Men Origins: Wolverine — but it looks like Fox knows what it is good at and is sticking to it. I mean, come on, if you can get praise from someone as lauded as Liefeld, you must be doing something right — shots fired, your turn, Marvel.
