Mark your calendars! Free Comic Book day is Saturday, May 6th. Trust me when I say, after having the opportunity to sneak a peek at this year's special edition comics, you are not going to want to miss this event.

So what is Free Comic Book Day?

It is an annual promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores. Every first Saturday in May, participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely *FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores. Some retailers offer special deals and creator signings to those visiting their establishments.

My kiddos favorite comic book store in Green Bay, Powers Comics, always has a sweet set-up for their loyal returning and potential new customers. In a matter of fact, they will have comic book writer and artist of Green Lantern and Green Arrow, Mike Grell, available to do autographs.

This fun, family-oriented event is celebrating its 15th year.

My boys and I have attended two of them.

Last year's FCBD happened to be on Mother's Day weekend. I decided to make it our family's outing and brought along all three of my kids, husband, and mom. My husband and mom had never been in a comic book store before. They were surprised to see the long lines of people waiting to pick up one of the many comic book titles available to the public for free. All in all, it was a very enjoyable time for the whole family.

I was thrilled that I obtained a free copy of Firefly's Serenity during last year's FCBD. Next weekend, I'm hoping to nab another one of Joss Whedon's titles: Buffy the High School Years. (By the way, I'm a HUGE fan of Joss' work.)

Even if you've never walked into a comic book store or held an actual comic book in your hand, May 6th is the perfect time for you to do so.
