'Freeze Ray! were the first words we heard out of Gru's mouth and shouting 'Freeze Ray!' while freezing people made it even cooler. That's how Gru bought all our love right from the start and the #DespicableMe franchise started getting all the attention it needed. But how did Gru come across his treasured pal? The Minions movie revealed how he acquired it, in a brief camouflaged scene. Missed it? No worries!

Kevin, Bob, and Stuart discovered a hidden commercial broadcast for villains advertising Villain-Con while they were in the department store (in the Minions movie). Villain-Con was a convention for villains and supervillains taking place in Orlando. They immediately set off for the convention in the hope of finding an evil boss to serve. But what they didn't know was that their future boss was right there at Villain-Con standing with his mother in a shop! Ring any bells?

In the above picture, we can recognize young Gru in his black shirt and trousers along with his striped scarf round his neck. Marlena Gru, his mom, looks almost the same here and in the Despicable Me movie, only younger. We can also comfortably assume that the man holding the Freeze Ray is young Dr. Nefario himself, taking into account the spikes in his hair and his peculiar invention. It is therefore highly plausible that Gru bought the Freeze Ray at Villain-Con.

Young Gru was again on the screen at the tail end of the Minions movie and this time he stayed for a bit longer. He froze Scarlet Overkill and flew away with the crown. In the scene below of the #Minions arriving at Villain-Con, we can see young Gru with his mom, looking at a young Dr. Nefario (perhaps) demonstrating the Freeze Ray!

Now it's obvious that Gru had bought the weapon there at Villain-Con. Also assuming that the man giving the demonstration was young Dr. Nefario himself, we then know that Villain-Con is where Gru met his good friend as he mentioned in the Despicable Me movie. And if you look carefully then you will find Gru taking a sneak peek at Stuart who just passes by. Its possible that he intrigued young Gru and Gru decided to recruit the minions as shown in the final scene when Gru flew above with all the minions running below after him. Since the Minions movie actually worked as a prequel to the Despicable Me series, the events can be correlated.

That's how Gru got hold of his iconic weapon, the Freeze Ray. The weapon has almost become an indispensable member of the Despicable Me family, making its appearance in all the movies of the franchise. Each time Gru shouted 'Freeze Ray!' while wielding it made the moments more entertaining and made Gru more despicable. We certainly hope to see Gru using the Freeze Ray again in the upcoming sequels (if there are any).
