From The Script To The Soundtrack, What's Going On With 'Frozen 2'?

There is not much known about 'Frozen 2,' but here is what has been revealed so far about the Disney sequel.

Frozen was a surprise hit, giving us a wonderful and quirky princess and a queen who showed us that we don't need the love of a prince as long as we have the love of family to help us melt a frozen heart. Fans have long awaited a sequel to the blockbuster hit, and one of the stars has finally said that the script is getting its finishing touches. Other than this, we don't know much about the sequel. But here's what we know so far.

Yay!

How far along is the script?

Kristen Bell, who voiced Anna, had mentioned that recording would begin in March of 2016, but it looks as though those plans had to be sidetracked in favor of fine-tuning the script, hopefully bringing us a perfect sequel that won't fall into the trap that so many Disney sequels have fallen into as being subpar or okay at best.

Given how many rewrites the original story went through (Elsa was originally going to be the villain) it is no surprise that the writers are going back and making sure that everything about this sequel is perfect. Given the popularity of the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign, as well, it may be that they are working that into the story. Honestly, I for one think that would be an interesting idea, though it is nice to have a royal member that doesn't need a significant other in a Disney movie.

Kristen Bell and Anna

Kristen clarified her earlier recording comments, stating that

"We haven’t, actually. I thought we were about to start recording, but I was mistaken. So, we haven’t begun yet. They’re putting the finishing touches on the script. We record, as those characters, often. At the change of season at the parks, whether it’s for Disneyland, Epcot, or when Japan opens, we will record new voices for our characters, but we actually haven’t started recording for the second Frozen. But what we have been working on is an Olaf Christmas special that we’re doing for next year. We’ve recorded that already, which has been a lot of fun to work on.”

What about the cast?

Some early rumors have stated that the original cast WOULD NOT be returning, in favor of all new characters including a prince looking for a princess. But neither Disney, nor the creators of Frozen have confirmed this, so take it with a grain of salt. We do know that the original leads are interested in coming back, and it seems as though the sisters could be challenged again in a familial way, because being a sister is always trying. Kristen mentions

"I'm sure that they [writers] will have to challenge their relationship in a new way and I'm sure that they will have to have an even bigger event to prove why kindness and familial love is paramount."

Who we know is on board (as directors):

  • Chris Buck
  • Jennifer Lee

Who might be on board (as cast):

  • Kristen Bell (Anna)
  • Idina Menzel (Elsa)
  • Jonathan Groff (Kristoff)
  • Josh Gad (Olaf)

Anything else we know?

Rumors have also circulated that the soundtrack is what's holding back the script. If true, it wouldn't be that much of a surprise as it will be hard to top the hit "Let It Go."

It seems as though for the moment the only confirmation we have is that the release may be in 2018, which does seem a long time to wait for a sequel.

However, having played Anna myself for events, I know that kids are still excited about the two sisters. No matter what, I am sure that those behind the film will bring the same magic they did before.
