'Frozen 2'

Can't Let It Go This Time

It's here! What, like many of its predecessors, seemed like merely an idea often talked about, is the first tangible footage of Frozen 2, and it is epic.

The teaser starts in a dark, foreboding setting on a beach, while Elsa stands on the shore looking out quite defiantly at the stormy waves. While she's still sporting her signature blue outfit (with some alterations, ie, pants), the scene almost makes you wonder if the character is going to go back to her roots. Namely, that of being the villain, as she was originally meant to be the villain of the first film. However, given the rest of the trailer, we can probably rest easy. Though, one can't deny that would certainly be quite the twist, especially for a Disney movie.

It's not clear what she hopes to accomplish, but Elsa repeatedly runs into the waves while using her powers to get past the giant waves. Unfortunately, her attempts are unsuccessful, and the trailer cuts to Anna running out onto a castle balcony. On the balcony she looks out at thousands of diamond shaped ice crystals that seem to be oscillating in color, much like an alarm system of sorts, directly from Elsa.

The next scene shows a very determined Kristoff riding an equally determined Sven through the woods. But, they're not alone. They have a whole herd of likewise determined reindeer following. Funnily enough, the scene is reminiscent of Jurassic World's Raptor Squad.

We then see Anna alone in a dark, rocky place, where she proceeds to climb to ledge, jumping from it to get to an unknown place. Fittingly, she is also sporting a new look. Like her sister, she is wearing pants, and even a new hairstyle that looks great on her, likely showing how she's grown since the first movie.

The trailer then cuts to Elsa, as Olaf huddles as closely to her as possible while they're trapped in the middle of blazing ring of purple fire. Using her powers, Elsa keeps the flames at bay.

Next is a young redheaded girl in the woods wearing clothes similar to Anna's. The girl watches as a strange breeze parts a clear path through leaves on the ground, after which, a boy, wearing a cloak with Arendelle's colors, is picked up by the breeze.

It then cuts to all five main characters on the edge of a cliff, looking out at the land below.

Perhaps the most epic part of the trailer is the end, which shows Anna, Kristoff, and Elsa walking down a path covered in leaves in a dark forest, when Anna suddenly peaks over her shoulder. Wasting no time, she pulls Kristoff's sword from its sheath, and takes a swing at the unseen danger.

Now, we have questions:

Why was Elsa trying to get over the waves?

Were those alarm crystals?

Why were Kristoff and Sven leading a herd of reindeer?

Where'd the purple fire come from?

Who are those kids in the woods?

Are those kids younger versions of Anna and Kristoff?

Are they part of a flashback, or did they get turned into teenagers?

How much time has passed; could they be Anna and Kristoff's kids?

Why have they all left Arendelle?

Who is the villain?

Could Hans be back?

What was the danger Anna swung a sword at?

So many questions, and the trailer gives nothing away. Well played Disney, well played. We're all dying for answers, and the next trailer, not to mention the movie, which comes out in November. Doubtless, we won't be able to let it go until then.
