In all the Jon Snow hype, we may have forgotten some of the less memorable fallen heroes of Westeros. No we don't mean Benjen Stark or the Hound - whose fates are still (technically) unconfirmed. Until we see some season 6 gravestones...I ain't buying it! But for this death we are going WAAAAAAY back to King's Landing and Season One of the show. The latest person to officially bite the dust in the world of HBO's Game of Thrones is Arya Stark's sword swinging mentor Syrio Forel.

*sob* *sob* What did the pint-sized man ever do to you David Benioff and D.B. Weiss? Many had hoped that Arya's Season 5 visit to the House of Black and White would herald a return for the plucky Bravos dance instructor. A theory circulated that Syrio Forel had something to do with the Many Faced God and the mysterious cult in Bravos. Even Maisie Williams herself waded in on the issue, telling IGN:

I always was like, ‘Oh, no, I feel like he’s still alive.’ I always had my own theory that he and Jaqen [H'ghar] were the same person.

Forel was 'killed' off-screen by Kingsguard member Meryn Trant, which added Trant to Arya Stark's repetitive 'kill list.' With Trant's storyline coming to a bloody end in last season's Mother's Mercy, many saw this as the perfect time for Syrio to return.

Well Maisie is sorry to break it to us, but showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss confirmed to her that Syrio Forel is well and truly brown bread. When she put the theory to the pair they told her:

No, he is dead!

So what was the young Stark girl's reaction on losing yet another ally in Westeros?

I was like, 'Oh, OK," . "So that put that to bed really quickly, but I guess we can all still dream.

Just because Syrio Forel has met his demise in the land of television, doesn't mean he is dead in the mind of author George R.R. Martin. The show is infamously different from Martin's epic A Song of Ice and Fire saga. In his books the likes of Ser Barristan Selmy and even Stannis 'the Mannis' Baratheon are still alive and kicking. Martin cryptically said at least one important player from his final two books has been controversially killed off in the television adaptation. Could Syrio Forel still have a part to play in the series' swansong? In the stylings of Jaqen H'ghar - praying to the Many Faced God, a girl can but dream.
