As Lord Petyr Baelish, a.k.a. Littlefinger, once put it, "What we don't know is what usually gets us killed." That's just as true in Westeros as it is in TV ratings.

While brilliant TV shows of yore have lost their ways by not having a plan — for example, The X-Files and Lost — fortunately that won't be the case for HBO's Game of Thrones. In a recent interview with Time to promote Season 7, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss explained that they've mapped out the series through the grand Season 8 finale:

"We know what happens in each scene. ... [S]o much of the endgame is stuff that we’ve been discussing for at least four or five years, if not longer. So a lot of the pieces have been put on the board years ago. You could go back to Season 2 and some of these ideas started to come out."

They also revealed that George R.R. Martin gave them the super-secret roadmap to his book series "between Season 2 and Season 3." Benioff elaborated:

"[T]hat’s when he told us about the Hodor backstory, and endgame stuff. He had some great stuff that he could share with us, like the Hodor thing, but a lot of it, he wasn’t sure yet, because he was writing, and he discovers things by writing. For us as TV writer-producers, we have to be architects. Everything has to be planned out really far in advance. And for us, we can’t say we’re going to stop and figure things out for a couple years. We know we have to have a season every year, pretty much. We knew we were barreling towards an ending, because we knew from the start the show would run seven or eight years."

However, it wasn't until they were shooting Season 7 that they really started creating a detailed outline for everything that would happen leading up to the series finale. Benioff and Weiss also shot down a bunch of online rumors about what will happen:

"The way it is now, if you want to find things out — and there’s some stuff online that’s completely bogus, which is kind of cool, not that we spread disinformation but some people are out there talking about complete bullshit."

The duo is keeping quiet about what we can expect, but it's definitely a relief that they know the full endgame and are ready to finish out the story in the most epic way possible.
