As expected, fire and blood were in full force in Episode 5 of Game of Thrones Season 8, entitled “The Bells.” If the Battle of Winterfell makes the Battle of the Bastards look like a theme park (as described by actor Peter Dinklage), then the Siege of King’s Landing makes the battle against the Night King at Winterfell look like Disney on Ice.

(SPOILERS ahead.) Having lost Ser Jorah, Missandei, Rhaegal, and half her armies in quick succession, Daenerys Targaryen unleashing her fury on Euron Greyjoy’s Iron fleet and the Westerosi capital was not a surprise. That the dragon queen, who has long resolved to protect the innocents, would snap and proceed to further rain a huge amount of fiery death and destruction onto civilians in King’s Landing—after the city rang the bells to signal its surrender (hence the episode title)—was, however, a real shocker and heartbreaking to see.

The episode was filled with dramatic confrontations, heartfelt gestures, and battle scenes that depict the atrocities of war. At the heart of it, Game of Thrones often conveys an underlying message that it’s usually the common folks who suffer in times of conflict.

As the HBO fantasy saga approaches its climax, here are 15 memorable lines from “The Bells.”
