'Game of Thrones' Series Finale Was Lackluster at Best

After eight seasons, the show finally comes to an end, but we still have questions.

It’s over. It’s finally over. After eight years, eight seasons, Game of Thrones finally came to what some would call, myself included—a lackluster end. We saw the closure of many storylines within the show, more main characters meeting their end in what can only be described as a disappointing and frustrating end to one of the most beloved shows to ever come out of HBO.

Many predictions were made on what would happen in this final season of George R.R. Martin’s, A Song of Ice and Fire; Who would sit on the Iron Throne? Would Daenerys be allowed to rule over the Seven Kingdoms even after her devastating destruction of King’s Landing? What about Bran, the Three-Eyed Raven who saw into the future? With the deaths of Cersei and Jamie, the role of Protector of the Realm was vacant. Speculation soon followed that maybe Tirion the Imp would ascend to the role of King, but that was unlikely considering he was a war prisoner, having stepped down as Hand of the King after Dany decided to lay waste to the Kingdom, killing millions of innocent people.

This last episode tended to keep us on the edge of our seats somewhat. As loyal fans, we needed closure, having invested years, not only reading the books, but binge-watching the show. I must say seeing Game of Thrones come to an end after eight years and eight seasons is bittersweet. So many emotions were going through my head while watching the series finale. I was happy, sad, annoyed, even angry that a show that I was so invested in was finally coming to an end.

We’ve been through so much in the course of eight years. We saw Ned Stark framed for a crime and beheaded at the end of season one, we saw the Red Wedding (I’m still not okay), The Purple Wedding when Tirion was framed for Joffrey’s murder, the fall of Hodor, the fall of the Wall at the hands of the Night King and undead Viserion, the list goes on. We’ve laughed and cried during the course of eight years, so you can see how attached fans are to this show. It’s addictive.

With Game of Thrones now over and done with, eyes are now set on the internet with any news of a spin-off. Rumors have been circulating that perhaps soon creators will make a prequel to the show we all know and love, that we can’t get enough of. It would be nice to see the origins of some of the characters we have all grown to love, even obsess over at times (Don’t lie, There’s a rule 34 for EVERYTHING on the web. I’ve seen porn parodies of GoT, and Nope. BIG NOPE).

For now, we have memories of sitting on our couch, and watching the happenings of those who call Westeros home. We’ll always remember where and what we were doing when we first saw Tirion slap Joffrey for being a little bitch. We’ll remember screaming at the TV when the Red Wedding happened, cursing the producers of the show for letting such a traumatic and heart-wrenching event happen before our eyes, and most recently, screaming with triumph as Jon put an end to the Mad Queen’s reign. These are memories that I know I will cherish going forward, even if Game of Thrones is done with. Like most others, however, I won’t re-live the drama and excitement with binge-watching the series… One instance of witnessing the beheading of Ned Stark and the Red Wedding is enough. I like my TV, but not enough to put myself through the heartbreak, and anger of reliving the moments that my favorite characters died in all over again.
