You don't have to be a fan of Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, or How to Get Away With Murder to know the name Shonda Rhimes is synonymous with addictive television and high ratings. Rhimes has been partnered with ABC for the past fifteen years, but Shondaland will be leaving Walt Disney Co's ABC Studios thanks to a multiyear contract with the streaming giant, Netflix.

According to a statement by Rhimes, the move is about creative freedom and instantaneous global reach.

“Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company. Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. He understood what I was looking for — the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation. The future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities.
Our current shows will continue to thrive on ABC and Shondaland will be there every step of the way. I could not have asked for a better home to begin my career. I continue to be grateful to work with so many talented people – especially our studio gladiator Patrick Moran and our most powerful and brilliant champion Channing Dungey.
Starting today, we are thrilled to begin creating new Shondaland stories with Netflix. Everyone at Shondaland is honored to expand both our audience and our creative identity with Ted and the entire team at Netflix.”

As of right now, ABC's Thursday nights will remain the same, and with two additional series on deck from Rhimes—a Grey's spinoff and For the People—ABC could have a Shondaland project on air for quite some time.

As for what Rhimes will be bringing to Netflix, one doesn't have to guess it'll be steamier than anything on broadcast television, but we can also rest assured it'll be good drama. That's all Shonda Rhimes knows how to create.

If you haven't seen any of her television series, Netflix has already got you covered. Whether it's scandal in the White House, drama in the operating room, or getting away with murder, Rhimes's creations are not to be missed. And there's little doubt that the streaming giant is getting the better end of the bargain here as this partnership is bound to boost their viewers and subscribers.

So while we're waiting for the next, delicious installment of superb television from Rhimes, let's hope Netflix will give us all episodes of a new series at once so we don't have to bite our nails until the following week.
