Think back 24 years, to September 10, 1993. A new science fiction series dealing in the paranormal called The X-Files premiered on TV. No one knew how the paranormal drama would be welcomed or if it would last beyond the first season. It didn't take long for X-Files to become a pop culture phenomenon, lasting nine seasons and spawning two big-screen movies. It was revived in 2016 for an additional six episodes and picked up for an eleventh season. Needless to say, the show has been successful.

Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) and David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) are the stars that have held The X-Files together for more than two decades. Their banter and opposing viewpoints made us think, laugh and even cry at times. It's no wonder viewers flocked to its eagerly-awaited 10th season last year and will undoubtedly be there when another 10 episodes hit our TV screens later in 2018.

Given the special occasion, it should come as no surprise that Anderson and Duchovny celebrated the anniversary of their series premiering back in 1993 in a way that can only be described as uniquely theirs.

After Anderson shared her mud-themed tweet, Duchovny was quick to reply with a heartwarming one of his own.

Duchovny tweeted a memorable line from the series and a shoutout to X-Files fans as his way of celebrating the 24th anniversary and, most likely, as a reminder that another season was on the way. Filming began this summer for the 2018 debut of Season 11.

Fans were ecstatic that both stars hadn't forgotten that Scully and Mulder created something that could never be destroyed or erased.

FOX broadcasting president, David Madden, is just as happy for the return of the show as we are

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators — these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’s creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon."

This anniversary commemoration is made more special by the fact that Anderson and Duchovny have had such a good chemistry onscreen over the years; seeing it in real life is why we love them. Of course, it has also resulted in numerous speculations over the years about their relationship as a whole, be it romantic rumors or rumors that the stars couldn't stand one another. Anderson laid that to rest in a 2016 interview with The Telegraph when she said "there’s such a lovely, supportive, really genuinely caring feeling” between the two of them. And if you ever had doubts, then this 24th anniversary tweet should quell those negative curiosities once and for all.

No matter how much time has passed, fans will continue to wonder what is out there, and we want Scully and Mulder to be the ones investigating the strange and unproven while keeping us on the edge of our seats.

Happy Anniversary, X-Files! We're looking forward to many more episodes in 2018.
