'Gotham' Series Finale

A Nikki Review

Gotham ended last night, sadly. The show premiered in 2014, with a young Bruce Wayne in—that classic Batman scene—the alley where his parents died. The show took on the challenge of being an origin story for many Gotham villians, and Batman himself.

For me, the show took a while to hook me. Some seasons seemed to drag, but several seasons later it started to really pick up. I was devastated to hear the show was going to come to an end. I thought, well damn things just started getting good. I hoped the ending would do the show justice.

The show started with a 10 year jump. I was excited to see a fully grown Selina Kyle as Catwoman. I was excited to see Bruce Wayne, as Batman, in full action. I was even more excited to see the final transformation of Jeremiah as the Joker. Boy did I get my hopes up.

First off, where was Catwoman's cat crowl? Where were the cool goggles she was rocking earlier? I really wanted more when it came to her and they just let me down.

What was that Batman shit? Yeah the beginning with him being all super stealth was cool, but could we have at least seen him in action? I wanted to see Batman beat a bad guy's ass. The batarang was cool though, but him not doing a damn thing but making cape sounds pissed me off.

Now let's get to Jeremiah. He might have saved the whole show. Cameron Monaghan was the real star of this show. He is such an amazing actor. I would really love to see him play the Joker again.

The best scene was by far where Penguin and that Nigma see Batman for the first time and run away. It was incredibly comical to see the two tied up and hanging from the light post in classic Batman style.

I really feel that they could do so much more with this show. The ending opened up so many story lines they could explore. So many great characters came and went. I would love to see more Poison Ivy. The plans to build a new Gotham would be a great place to bring her back to save the plants that are surely going to be killed. The Joker is now back on the scene; let's see more of that. They could explore him going through different "Harleys." What happened to Scarecrow? Where did Hugo Strange run off to? What the hell is growling in the sewers? I say Killer Croc. What characters do you think they should bring back and expand on?

I understand the show was never meant to be about Batman. The show was mostly about the evolution of Jim Gordon. We seen a young fresh faced Jim joining the ranks of the Gotham City Police Department. We've seen him question himself when all the other cops showed that they didn't care about Gotham or its people. We've seen him fall in love and lose that love, just to love again. Jim Gordon brought the best out of people with his undying love for his city.

Seeing Jim Gordon become a father was the highlight of his story for me. Seeing a tiny little Barbara Lee Gordon, Batgirl, was thrilling and so cute. The scene with the Joker and Barbara Keen echoed the iconic comic book scene from The Killing Joke. In the comic book story, the Joker shows up at Barbara Gordon's (Batgirl) apartment and shoots her in the gut.

If this show wasn't enough to fill your inner Batman fanboy or fangirl, then you'll be happy to know that Gotham's creator, Bruno Heller, is working on a show about Alfred Pennyworth for EPIX. Sadly, EPIX has no plans on connecting the two shows.

What did you think of the series finale or the whole show in general? I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions.
