Hansel and Gretel and the Rumpelstiltskin Queen

When the first girl disappeared, there was a minor stir, some condolences for the family, not much else.

When the second girl disappeared, only Hansel saw a pattern. I didn't disagree with him when he brought it up to me, but the town hall laughed him out of there. I had to cook him his favorite soup that night. He still moped on the bench outside after dinner. He said it was to keep watch, but I could tell it wasn't.

When the third girl disappeared, the town hall finally heard Hansel out. Since the only ones they'd last seen the girls with were spinster-looking women, he'd deduced that it must be a coven of witches that was kidnapping them for some sort of ritual that required virgins. Hansel quietly checked with the parents. None of the girls had known a man's touch. The full moon was coming soon, and he thought it had something to do with that. A woman who was a widow who lived alone with just a cat kept having visions of what the witches were doing. They even included the girls' faces, then would flash to a cauldron with a recipe next to it. One morning, she woke up knowing what they'd do with the girls. When she was also laughed out of the town hall, I took her aside after waiting in a back pew. I explained that Hansel and I were witch hunters and could help her. She could even stay with us while we were working together if she liked. She tried staying home the first night, but found so many neighbors peeping into her house at night. Then, the mayor came by and told her that it would be advisable for her to move out of their town since she caused too much of a stir there. The neighbors didn't want someone who'd been seeing visions living among them.

She then moved with us fully. Our house was in a swamp. It was far enough out of town that no one bothered us, but close enough for a short ride into town for some provisions. We had our own garden and a chicken coop for eggs. There was a wild rooster that would occasionally visit the chickens just long enough to get them to lay eggs, then leave. We thought he had other coops he visited as well. We named him Casanova.

Elizabeth, the lady with the visions, loved to garden at her home, so we let her take over gardening at ours. Every time she showed up, the garden seemed to reach out to her.

Her cat started out following her everywhere. When, as she adjusted to the house, she started spending more time on her own.

We had less bugs and vermin now that we had a cat at our house.

We used to sleep in the loft upstairs, but Elizabeth and her cat moved up there and we slept downstairs in the living area. Elizabeth would be safe from any townspeople that came to inquire about her since we would guard her. No one did except the mayor. We simply argued that she was technically outside of the town and no longer his problem.

"I hate him." She said once we'd closed the door, "All he cares about is the image of his precious town and not actually protecting it. He's lost three girls and has done nothing about it. That's three of his precious town's families that won't be voting him back into office."

"I agree that talk is cheap." Hansel said, "But it's getting through to the town's official that we need."

I shook my head. "Enough of the townspeople are angry about what happened, and the inaction of the officials, particularly the girls' families. We're the only ones doing anything about it and I think they'd much rather work with us than watch their officials make empty promises."

Elizabeth nodded along and Hansel shrugged.

"You might be right," he said.

We'd thought that three virgins would be enough, but the witches didn't content themselves with so few.

The next victim caught the mayor's attention well enough considering she was his own daughter. She was spoiled and a known flirt, but for all that she was a virgin. Apparently, she'd had a deal going with her father. So long as she did nothing that cost her her virginity, he would turn the other way on all other activities.

She was such a bossy thing that the witches gagged her when they'd had enough of her complaining. All the other girls gave them a look of relief when one of the witches put the tape on her mouth. They'd had enough of her too.

"Sad that this is what we agree on," she said, shaking her head as she closed the door to the cage they were all locked in.

The witches had found some old papers of Elizabeth Bathory's. They'd looted the Castle Cachtice a while back and had never gone through what they'd found until recently. The head witch saw the recipe for bathing in the blood of virgins among the papers they'd found in the castle. At first, she simply denied the idea appealed to her and distracted herself with spells.

It left her no rest. She wanted to try it, but knew that the other two would be hesitant about trying something so risky and new. It wasn't just killing a newt in a cauldron. This involved human virgins.

When they kidnapped the mayor's daughter, the other two began to get worried. The girl self-importantly announced it to the one who was gagging her as she did so, and she went running to the other one and told her.

"This better be good," she said, giving the third one an ornery look since she knew not to interrupt her gardening.

She nodded, took a breath and spoke. "The one we just nabbed, there's a thing about her."

The second looked at her quizzically.

"Well, she happened to mention that she's the mayor's daughter."

"The WHAT?!" The second yelled, grasping her hand-hoe hard.

The first sensed the tension that was mounting and thought the other two were growing hesitant again. She prepared herself for talking them down, but was jarred by the news they brought her.

"She's ... what?" She growled.

The simply stood still with their hands folded and nodded.

At the same time, we were getting our plan set in motion. Elizabeth was drinking water to prepare for keeping in psychic touch with me as I was trying on the dress I'd wear posing as a virgin to be kidnapped. I was one, so I'd pass perfectly.

I wore the dress I'd been wearing when Hansel and I had gone to the gingerbread house, but tailored to my woman's figure. I even wore my hair in the braids I'd worn then.

Shortly before I set out, Elizabeth sat us down and confided her story in us.

She'd been the queen in the Rumpelstiltskin fiasco. She only gained her powers after she'd gone through it. She told no one, spending her family years in silence since she didn't want to draw negative attention to her family, especially since she was a queen. Once her children were grown and her son had taken over the throne, she moved to the town I'd met her in. She told us that it was the town closest to her son's kingdom. When she lived in town, she occasionally heard news of him. It was always good. It made her heart glad.

We were glad to finally know the true tale of Elizabeth.

Hansel tucked all the daggers he could possibly fit into my dress. He even fastened two thigh holsters with daggers onto me. I didn't bother wearing bloomers. I wore one iron dagger in my boot. The blade had been salted. As they were taking me out of the town, the head witch sensed the iron and took the dagger away from me. I still had others. I had enough for me and the other girls.

As soon as the third witch was out of sight, I told them who I was and why I was there. I picked the lock with a pin I always kept in my hair. I looked around, then handed each girl a dagger except for the mayor's daughter, who gave me cruel and imperious looks the whole time. I did un-tape her mouth though.

The witches were out. None of them had thought to guard us. Apparently, they'd gone out to find two other baths since the towels were set out for three and the head witch was using the cauldron.

"If we'd had the time, we could've cooked her in it." Hansel joked, making us all laugh. The others didn't get the full meaning of the joke since they didn't know who we'd been.

We gave them bread, soup and water, then brought them back home. We even gave them fresh clothes to return in.

The parents were all so relieved to have their daughters home. One man even talked of making Hansel mayor, but he declined.

They did make the father of the first girl kidnapped, the one who'd wanted to do something about it, mayor after deciding to exile the now former mayor. The other plan to have him hanged was secretly carried out in the wee hours of the morning. By daybreak, he was already hanging from the gallows.
