Review Summary:

The best World War II film since "Saving Private Ryan," without a doubt! It's something more than just visual excitement. It's an emotional, breathtaking adventure, a story about a real hero who refused to carry any weapon onto the battlefield.

The action sequences are very intense and the story is heartbreaking; that's why both men and women can enjoy this film equally. Hell, we see the way that war is changing everyone, the way they think or feel, and Mel Gibson has done fantastic work in showing us how horrifying war can actually be. He shows all the bloody, violent horror that has been inflicted by no-one else but people, in such unbelievable technique, that it makes your heart pump.

This film is filled with fascinating shots and music that will probably make you cry. I would like to mention Andrew Garfield's magnificent performance as Desmond T. Doss. His acting made me laugh and cry, with his character, and I really started to believe him to be a 'superhero' of some kind (and he is in a way). Actually, there wasn't a single actor who seemed like he/she didn't fit in this film. Even Vince Vaughn, who we have gotten used to seeing in comedies (as "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story", "Wedding Crushers" and other films) portrayed his character in such a way that allowed me to forget about his earliest roles and I started to see him only as Sergeant Howell.

For some people, this movie could be too cheesy, because of various American World War II films we have seen before, but in my opinion, it wasn't. No one is going to remember it because of hundreds and hundreds of USA flags placed everywhere; it wasn't like that at all, that wasn't what they were going for. It isn't about the war between two armies, but the man who tried to do his duty by saving lives instead of taking them.

Gibson has proved that he still knows how to surprise and be original making his films. He keeps working in his own technique and it's almost flawless. An absolute blast!

I give this film 9/10
