'Happytime Murders'

A Clever Comedy That's a Load of Fun if You Enjoy Muppet Movies

Happytime Murders is a comedy about a string of murders based in Los Angeles where both puppets and humans coexist. There's a serial killer murdering puppets from an old TV show and it's up to a pair of detectives, one puppet and one human, to figure out the mystery. Fortunately for us this pair have a turbulent past and it gets revealed throughout the movie. A lot of the fun comes from the revealing of the past relationships of the characters.

This movie didn't get much press as it's geared toward adult audiences with its mature themes and jokes. I wasn't too sure what to expect as I only saw one or two trailers on YouTube for this movie. The trailers did do a good job exciting me to watch the show. It looked like a movie similar to Who Shot Roger Rabbit?, and I liked that movie. The trailers also had the same sort of vibe I got from watching the sausage party trailers in the past. I liked that movie too. I like Muppet movies so that was a plus as well. This was turning out to be a must see movie for me.

I'm happy to report that I was smiling throughout the movie because of its charm and wit. All of the characters had plenty of charisma. Their personalities are very distinct and play a big part in the enjoyment of the film. I guess you would expect this from a Jim Henson production team. Another thing to expect was that the puppetry would be spectacular, and it was. All of the puppets in this movie were hilarious. A lot of them were cute and some of them were really funny. At some points of the movie I was wondering how they did the special effects. Stick around after the end to find out how they did the effects if you're interested. There were a few really outrageous laugh out loud moments that catch you off guard. I'm glad the trailers didn't give away too much. A problem with comedy trailers is that the best jokes are usually spoiled in the trailer.

The movie was more than just simply a comedy. It had a film noire murder mystery element to it. They didn't really add anything new to the film noire category but we don't really have too many film noire comedies. They also dove into race relations and PTSD. It was nice and nuanced so nothing seemed too forced. The puppets are mainly performers and looked down upon. They even talked about our societies notion of what beauty is when one of the puppets in the movie went so far as bleached their skin color and got a new nose to look more human. The PTSD aspect has an important aspect to the story. I guess those are pretty hot topics of today so I didn't blink an eye when I noticed.

Although it is a mature movie not all of the jokes were crass and disgusting but there were a fair amount of sex jokes and swearing for the sheer absurdity of cute puppets swearing. There is something to find funny for all sorts of senses of humour in this movie. The banter between the main characters Phil and Connie are fun and at times over the top. I really liked their chemistry and I think a lot of people will enjoy their connection.

Is this a movie you have to see in the theatres? For people looking for outrageous crude humour I'd say no, you can wait for it to come out on video. I think overall, adults will get an enjoyment out of the movie. If you're like me and love Muppet movies I think you'll enjoy this movie enough to see it in the theatres. I also think those that loved Sausage Party will love this film. Unfortunately because of the low press and the fact that it is a mature movie I think it won't do well in the theatres. The public will definitely be confused whether it's a movie for them. Some adults don't even watch cartoons geared toward adults because they think it's childish. I also know a lot of adults that won't watch movies unless they feel the movie can realistically happen in their lives. Regardless, I hope they make more movies similar to this. Perhaps make a TV series or sequel?
