Have no fear - Suicide Squad is here!

With Suicide Squad already the most-talked-about summer movie of 2016, excitement is building to fever pitch! Warner Bros. knew this, and it's no surprise that their panel included a tremendous new Suicide Squad video. Although the clips include a lot of things we've already seen, there's some new dialogue that may just have blown the lid on the plot of Suicide Squad...

We all know the core concept behind Suicide Squad. Amanda Waller - played by Viola Davis - gathers an unlikely team of supervillains, offering them a chance to do some good, or die trying. The majority of the Squad are old Batman villains (such as Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's Killer Croc or Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn). One, Karen Fukuhara's Katana, is traditionally an ally of Batman, and may be there to keep the Squad on the straight and narrow.

This is where the new clips give us more information, though. Trailers have shown us several glimpses of a bar-scene, in which the Squad are settled and getting drinks. This time round, we get some dialogue from Will Smith's Deadshot:

"Here's to honor among thieves. We almost pulled it off, despite what everybody thought. They're gonna blame us for the whole thing. We're the patsies. Don't forget, we're the bad guys."

What does this quote tell us?

Deadshot and Harley make a good team.

This quote is staggering, in that it essentially tells us the entire narrative structure of Suicide Squad! The Squad's missions won't go well; the reference to 'honor among thieves' suggests they'll be betrayed while on a mission, most likely by Cara Delevingne's Enchantress, who's been set up as the villain of the film. Somehow the Squad escape, not just from the Enchantress but also from under the watchful eye of Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag (do you really think he'd leave them settled down having drinks in a bar?).

The Squad start the film as supervillains forced to work as part of a black ops team. This quote, though, shows that they get their chance to escape - and then realize they have a choice. They either leave the world to go to Hell in a handbasket as the Enchantress's power grows, or they can go into action to save the world. Suicide Squad isn't the story of a team of supervillains - it's the story of how a team of supervillains become superheroes.

What about Batman and the Joker?

What part will Bruce Wayne play?

As I've noted elsewhere, Batman is a dark, brooding presence over this film. There are rumors he challenges Amanda Waller, warning her that he's watching her. He's one of those who are expecting Suicide Squad to fail. It's possible that, by the end of the film, the Squad will have earned his grudging respect.

More difficult to predict is the role of Jared Leto's Joker, who's a complicating factor in any equation. It's possible that the Joker's presence divides Harley's loyalty, giving the Enchantress an opportunity to betray the team. If that's the case, we can expect this to be revisited later in the film, with Harley choosing to do good in spite of the Joker's presence.

These clips don't tell us everything; but they do give us a lot more information than I think many viewers have realized, and I genuinely believe they set up the overarching structure of the film. With Suicide Squad due out August 5th, the wait is almost over!

Do you think this is the structure of Suicide Squad?
