If you love Disney, then you gotta love the Disney women (including the princesses). The problem is they are often remembered for their perfect beauty before anything else. There is more to a Disney woman than just her looks. Concept artist and illustrator, Elaine Ho, recognized this and made a series of art depicting the beauty and personalities of these iconic animated women. She even goes on to explain why each of these characters are so special to her.

Here are some of Elaine's inspired creations:

Merida

[I] always envisioned Merida unfettered by the storm, ready to face the perils that come her way.

Her movie is called Brave for a reason. Merida is fearless against danger, but she is also brave enough to stand up for herself and be her own independent woman. The Scottish princess does this by refusing to marry a prince she does not love, nor does she seem to have interest in marriage. She does not need a man in her life, and she is perfectly fine with that.

Tinkerbell

And it was then it hit me how incredibly powerful Tinkerbell was, but she was always depicted as the short skirted jealous little fairy.

Fairies are not just wings and pixie dust, you know. They have epic magical powers too. Tinkerbell shows that even the smallest being can be something grand. That cute and mischievous persona should not be under estimated. Tinkerbell is just as strong and fierce as the Mulan. Speaking of whom, look who is next?

Mulan

I always found it rather odd that Mulan’s merchandise always revolved around her in the matchmaker’s dress. She sang a whole song about not fitting into society’s expectations of her, and that dress was one such symbol.

Mulan is technically not a princess, yet we place her in that category along with Cinderella and Snow White. It is perfectly fine to be a princess, but Mulan is a warrior. Why can't warriors be something little girls aspire to be? However, that is exactly what our fearless soldier has done for young girls. That is the kind of impact she has made.

Tiana

There are people who work extremely hard, but never being able to catch up due to the color of their skin.

This picture displays a message we need to hear even now. Unfortunately, there are still people today who look down on those with a different skin color. Here we see Tiana's struggle with racism, yet we also her determination to follow her dreams. She will not let prejudice stand in her way.

Rapunzel

To take that first step, to run away into a world with nothing, takes immeasurable amounts of courage. It’s frightening.

I think every young adult can relate to how Rapunzel is depicted here. At that age, we are struggling to find ourselves and figure out where we want to go forward in life. But that is why we take the first step into the world on our own. It is frightening, but also exciting.

Elaine's art also includes Maleficent, Esmeralda, Elsa, Ariel, and Ursula, all of which portray a powerful message like the others. Art that shows courage, acceptance, bravery, and even vulnerability, is something to take notice of. Well done, Elaine!
