For fans of the teen comedy series #GirlMeetsWorld, the sorrow just keeps on coming. #Disney decided to pull the plug on a fourth season of the spinoff a few months ago and fans have been campaigning ever since for another potential season. The hashtag #SaveGMW was born and although many contributed to expressing their love for the series, it sadly wasn't enough.

An announcement recently came via a Twitter account from the show's writers (including co-creator Michael Jacobs), stating that they could not find a home for a new season:

"I wasn't able to find a new venue for the show. I'm sorry. We brought our best and hope we made you think and feel. Until next time. Thanks."

Jacobs tweeted the following day expressing his gratitude to "all who have written in support of the show." He lovingly stated the fans are who they did it for and offered up a series of tweets detailing what fans would have seen in a fourth season:

"Season 4 would've shown that what drew Farkle, Lucas and Zay to Riley and Maya was the deep friendship and respect they had for each other. And their relationship was the guide in how to meet the world. Especially our current world. Because to find love, friendship and respect must be at the center of it. Cory and Topanga always knew that. So, as you all meet this world, we wish you friendship, respect and love. Oh, and Auggie and Ava were forever."

He concluded with a touching wish for its viewers and a brief Mr. Feeny quote from the original beloved '90s series, Boy Meets World, that makes all of us weep:

"All of us at BMW and GMW have loved bringing you these stories. We hope we have taught you to dream, try and do good. Class dismissed."

The Fan Response Is Heartbreaking

As the series spanned 72 episodes over a three-year period, fans clearly had an immense connection to these characters as evident by the myriad of disappointed twitter messages:

@GMWWriters You've got a lot of very disappointed fans here who were expecting more after trying their hardest to save #GirlMeetsWorld.— Tali (@astral_tali) May 4, 2017

we should think abt how lucky we were to have 3 seasons of #GirlMeetsWorld. Im sad to see it end officially but it helped me sm&I'm thankful— emma (@stuffxthangs) May 4, 2017

Many fans even offered alternative means for a new season. As the creators were unable to find a suitable home, fans took it upon themselves to suggest intriguing alternatives to the usual bigger networks:

@detourowan @GMWWriters I wouldn't mind a youtube red seriessss— Laodicean (@fiamanlapaz) May 4, 2017

A #YouTubeRed or web series was suggested in response to Jacobs' tweet. Many incredible shows have utilized the web series platform to reach an audience including a number of modern takes on classic stories. Although the budget for production may be a little tight, finding a home on a streaming service could be the right fit for a resurgence of Girl Meets World.

@GMWWriters I can't believe no one would pick up the # 1 rated Disney show. How about Girl Meets World - The Movie— Rick Penxa (@RPenxa) May 3, 2017
@GMWWriters @BMWSequeI THERE SHOULD TOTALLY BE A MOVIE ABOUT GIRL MEETS WORLD #joshayaneedsahappyending— JJ-elite (@jime279) February 15, 2017

Channeling the power of a series into a movie is a popular suggestion made by virtually any diehard fan of a canceled show. Although transferring a series onto the big screen poses its own respective challenges, there are numerous examples of TV-to-film adaptations that got it remarkably right.

Whether or not fans will see a potential return for the series (in whatever kind of format) is up to the #television gods to decide. Although the series had a significant drop in the ratings during its tenure at Disney, it still remains one of the more popular shows on the network in recent history. The creators seemingly have a monumental love for the property, so hopefully fans will receive some kind of solace with either a web series or film in the future.
