Taking limited from its title, The Sinner is returning with a brand new season. Receiving huge acclaim from fans and critics alike, it's no surprise that the USA Network wanted to renew the show. Season one was rated the top new cable series of 2017, the show was a massive hit.

What began as a 'whydunnit' about a mother, Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) murdering a random guy on a beach in broad daylight, the show will now delve into the life of Harry Ambrose, the lead detective who put his heart into Cora's case. Here's everything we know so far about the much anticipated second season.

What is the plot?

Here's the official synopsis for the second season:

Season 2 lures Detective Harry Ambrose (Pullman) back to his hometown in rural New York to assess an unsettling and heart wrenching crime — parents murdered by their 11-year-old son, with no apparent motive. As Ambrose realizes there’s nothing ordinary about the boy or where he came from, the investigation pulls him into the hidden darkness of his hometown. He’s pitted against those who’ll stop at nothing to protect its secrets — and a mysterious woman who proves to be a complicated, enigmatic piece to this haunting puzzle.

If you've watched the first season then you know this show doesn't shy away from grisly topics. Season one included a lot of jaw dropping moments, including an incestuous scene. By the sounds of it, we're going to be getting another gut-wrenching season. What 11 year old kills their parents? It promises to be a rollercoaster of a ride.

Will Cora return?

The end of season one saw Cora sentenced to two years in a psychiatric facility and with Harry returning to his hometown it wouldn't make sense for Cora to play a huge part in the second season. Also, Jessica Biel has not signed on for season two yet, which suggests we might not see this character again. However, if Biel was to sign on it'd be nice to see a scene where Harry is visiting her to see how she's getting on. That would be a nice ending to her story.

There's also a chance that season two could take place somewhere in the future. Maybe Cora has completed the two years and is now out of the facility. A look into what her life is like after everything she's been through would be appeasing.

I'm sure we'd all love to see her again but her story was wrapped up in season one so it wouldn't be frustrating if she doesn't crop up in season two. Shifting the focus to a new set of characters would be refreshing and exciting.

When will it be released?

Having only just been green lit for its second season, I wouldn't be surprised if we have to wait until next summer (2019) to see our favourite detective back on our screens.

The Sinner became one of the best shows of the year so when it does return, expect another epic and disturbing journey. It promises to be one hell of a ride!
